"I wouldn't have brought Drake to the match," said Sarah Jane. Damian and Jon
blinked in surprise. "There was no guarantee he would fight, and there would've
been too much temptation to just depend on him."
"What about Shields?" asked Damian. "Don't you feel the same about him? That
he's your man to go to in a clinch?"
"No," said Sarah Jane. "My battle with Lance made me realize I was depending on
Shields too much. And my last battle made me realize that I was also depending
too much on Nipper. A good trainer needs to always have a few pokemon of each
type ready. When I caught Bombadier, I practically neglected my Doduo. Sybil
isn't even at half the levels she could be if I had been training her as well.
And Hato-kun.... the poor Pidgey has never been away from my grandparents'
home. You weren't counting on the idea that Drake wouldn't fight, and you set
yourself up for disappointment."
Damian stared at Sarah Jane wordlessly.
"You felt he betrayed your trust," she said quietly. "When you took out the
Pokeball, he probably felt the same way."
An uncomfortable silence fell over the group. Jon looked back and forth between
Sarah Jane and Damian. To try and break through the silence, Christy picked up
the remote control and turned on the television. Commercials advertising
Brock's Diner flashed across the screen, with pictures of a Vulpix sitting on an
Onix.
"I think he's gone for good," said Damian in a low voice.
"Maybe," said Sarah Jane. "I hope he'll come back once he's had a chance to
cool down and think things through."
"And now, in the Pokemon League competion....," said the newscaster as the
commercials ended, "The matchups for tomorrow's battles have been announced."
He read off the list of those entered in the 0-6 badge division, then started on
the 7+ group. "And the last matchup is Sarah Jane Eckert of Rosetta town versus
Jon...."
Christy dropped the remote control as Sarah Jane and Jon looked at each other in
surprise. "You against me?" asked Jon.
"It had to be, sooner or later," said Damian. "One of us would have wound up
fighting the other."
"I would have prefered later," said Sarah Jane. "Or never....
