"Uh..." Rilli frantically glanced around her room for a concealing hiding place.
"The bed's too low... the desk's too high..." Just as she was about to have
Robert burrow under the covers of her unmade bed and hope that her mom wouldn't
notice, she realized the best hiding spot in her room is... "Hurry, in here!"
She opened her closet door and pulled Robert into it. "It's a bit cramped in
there, but I'm afraid you'll have to manage for a few minutes," she whispered
apologetically before sliding the door closed.
"Rilli!" the girl's mom called from the kitchen. Mithril-rama quickly tied her
robe back around her waist and hurried out the bedroom door. "What is it?" she
asked, wincing a bit as she stepped onto the cold kitchen floor.
Rilli's mother glanced up and tsked. "It's two o'clock and you still haven't
gotten dressed? There are some groceries left out in the garage, bring them in
here, won't you?"
"Sure, sure..." Rilli did as she was asked, then got an idea. "Can I go to
Robert's house for a while?"
"Be back before dinner!" Rilli took off before her mom even finished speaking.
She ran to her room and quickly changed into a sweatshirt and jeans, then let
Robert out of the closet.
"How come you never wear any of the dresses you have in there?" Robert asked
before he was shushed by Rilli. She motioned for him to follow her. The two
slipped on their shoes and crept out the dooor. "Stay low!" she hissed to him
as they passed under the kitchen window, where her mom was washing vegetables.
It wasn't until they turned the corner and was safely out of sight until she
sighed in relief. "Robert, why don't you go home first? I still have to finish
your card, so I'll come over after a few minutes."
"All right, but don't take too long!" Robert gave his girlfriend a quick kiss
on the cheek and jogged off towards his house. Rilli cut across the lawn back
into the house. "Back already?" her mom called from the kitchen.
"I forgot something!" she called back, dashing into her room to her desk and
pulling out her colored pencils again to put the finishing touches on Robert's
Valentine card. Not five minutes later, she ran out of the front door again,
but was stopped by a glimpse of red in the bushes near the door. She carefully
reached into the leaves to pull out a red rose in full bloom. "How pretty...
where did this come from?" She turned over a small tag attached to the stem.
"From: Robert, To: Rilli... why is it in the bushes?" Carrying the rose, Rilli
ran off in the direction of Robert's house.
-----
Robert opened the door before Rilli could even ring the doorbell. "What took
you so long? I was waiting--" He gulped as he caught sight of the rose.
"Uh... Rilli! I didn't know you bought a rose too!"
"I didn't buy it, I found in the bushes by my house." Rilli smiled and sniffed
at the flower. "Did you lose it, Robert? It's very sweet of you to get it..."
Robert blinked. "Sweet? You think so?"
"Sure! It's very pretty."
Robert scratched his head in embarrassment. "Well, the truth is, I bought it
for you, Rilli, but since you said that buying flowers and cards doesn't show
true love, I thought you wouldn't like it..."
"No way!" Rilli ran up and gave Robert a big hug. "You've shown me how much
you love me, Robert, this rose only emphasizes it! I'd love anything that you
took the time and money to get for me!" She suddenly remembered something and
pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket. "Here's your Valentine's card,
Robert... I kinda rushed on it so it's not as good as it could be..."
Robert's eyes watered as he looked over the card, which depicts the two of them
cuddled together, a picture of the perfect couple. "It's beautiful, Rilli!
I'll frame it and hang it up in my room!"
"Well, it's not THAT good..." Rilli blushed.
"Sure it is! After all, it came out of your love!" Robert gave the drawing a
kiss, then gave the real Rilli a kiss. "Come on in, there's a few things we
should talk about..."
