Shiruken reeled behind his trainer, seeking any escape from the massive
fire blast that the metronome had become. The others nearby were not
quite as affected by the heat, sheltered partially by their boulder
cover, but they all knew the cover would not last.
Meanwhile, Bon, Ian, and Clyde continued their pursuit of Doppler-puff,
only slowly realizing that the vast cavern they now ran through had, in
places, become hot enough to ignite the rock itself. Doppler managed to
stay one beat ahead of them, the roar of the flames drowning out his
tune, but somehow managing to keep his stolen keyboard working even in
the hellish heat.
And the clefairy/clefable mob milled around, their leader temporarily
absent and their targets with another concern for the moment.
After another half minute and several particularly close grabs, Doppler
frowned. #This isn't working. They won't go to sleep. Maybe...maybe
another metronome...it's risky...# Swipe, swipe, dodge. #...but worth
a chance.# He cranked up the volume...
"Arashi no highway hashiritsuzuketa
togireta yume no yukue sagashite
nigai maboroshi subete no uso o
senaka de hajikitobashite..."

Somewhere, Spectre looked up for a moment, casting his gaze towards Mt.
Moon. Was it his imagination, or was something almost calling to him?

Doppler frowned as Seymour's crew blinked in confusion, rather than
resuming the dance as he had intended. #The *lyrics*! They're trying
to understand the lyrics, too much to dance to the music. Not that I
blame them; I had the same reaction the first time I heard it. How did
that translation go?#
"I kept racing down the stormy highway, searching
for the whereabouts of my interrupted dream,
letting all my lies and bitter illusions
blow off my back, with the wind."
A loud *CRACK* announced the departure of part of one wall. A giant,
winged, stone statue of an insect slowly slid through the rift towards
the heat.
Smasher noticed it first. "Looks like someone's got a shrine to
Beedrillbub."
"HAD a shrine, you mean." Ema scanned the wall. "Anyone see a way out
of here?"
"We're all just lonely hearts in the big grass plain,
everyone a pokemon lost in love.
Day by day in the big grass plain,
tears only aggravate thoughts that won't rest."
The statue slipped through onto the floor, and immediately bounced off
from the heat. Bouncing off one foot, then another, and somehow not
falling over, it almost looked like it was dancing through the inferno.
"Tonight...*Hurricane*
...I want...*Hurricane*
...to tell you I love you. (Love you.)
Tonight...*Hurricane*
...train me...*Hurricane*
...like you mean it.
*Puff! Give me Puff!*"
Doppler flinched, but kept singing. #'Train me'? Ick! Wish I could've
stopped before I remembered that line; gotta keep the rhythym up now...#
"I cannot share the pain in your heart
with foreign words that merely placate.
I want you to tell me what it is
that makes your eyes cloud over."
Bon made one last leap at Doppler, only to rebound off a glowing sphere
that encased him. She blinked once, then realized what it was: the
metronome was building into a giant all-directions hyper beam, whose
originating core was right in front of her. Ian and Clyde quickly came
to the same conclusion.
One mutual glance confirmed their suspicions. "RUN!"
"In the big grass plain, our hearts are all torn and tattered,
and we're tired of dancing around each other
at night, so in the big grass plain's empty days,
we waited anxiously for the warmth of a poke ball."
Doppler discovered his new "armor" when he felt himself running in
circles around the inside of the sphere. After a few anxious seconds,
he realized it was safe: the beam would explode outward, leaving the
insides safe. Not having to run any more, he concentrated on the music,
anxious to get the attack off before the trio who had opposed his ally
could escape with their lives.
"Tonight...*Hurricane*
...I want...*Hurricane*
...to tell you I love you. (Love you.)
Tonight...*Hurricane*
...I want...*Hurricane*
...to fight for you once more.
*Puff!* *Burning Puff!*"
#Why don't I think the jigglypuff I learned this from quite got the
translation right?#
"We're all just lonely hearts in the big grass plain,
everyone a pokemon lost in love.
Day by day in the big grass plain,
tears only aggravate thoughts that won't rest."
In the next cavern, Cinder looked up from his interrogation of Seymour.
It had gotten pleasantly warmer all of a sudden, and there was some new
light source in there. Unfortunately, cavern walls shielded him from
whatever was going on, so he could not investigate the sounds coming
from the battle without taking his eyes off his prey. Cinder opted to
concentrate on Seymour for the moment.
"Tonight...*Hurricane*
...I want...*Hurricane*
...to tell you I love you. (Love you.)
Tonight...*Hurricane*
...train me...*Hurricane*
...like you mean it.
*Puff! Give me Puff!*"
"THIS WAY!" Morgan suddenly bolted for an exit that had recently
melted in the cavern's side. Not even pausing to double-check, Smasher,
Ema, and company bailed after him, each one easily leaping the small
creek of lava that remained of the wall.
"Tonight...*Hurricane*
...I want...*Hurricane*
...to tell you I love you. (Love you.)
Tonight...*Hurricane*
...I want...*Hurricane*
...to fight for you once more.
*Puff!* *Burning Puff!*"
The rockets, having heard Morgan's yell, sprinted for the same exit,
ducking between the legs of the dancing Beedrillbub. They were only
five steps away...
"*Give me Puff!*"
...three steps...
"*Burning Puff!*"
...one step...
*BOOM*
