“The light burns. It burns all around it, entrapping its foes and
entangling its allies. No one can escape the light, only enshroud it
temporarily. But in the end, all things surrender to the light.”
Shadow sat in one of Saffron’s many dark alleys. At his side, his two
Pokemon, Abra and Scyther, were listening intently.
“Always remember, you must never surrender to the light, and at the same
time, never allow the darkness to take over.”
“Scy…”
“Abra.”
Shadow sighed, and rubbed his eyes. It was the middle of the day, but
the alley was pitch black.
/~Shadow, I can sense many other psychic Pokemon within a five mile
radius. Perhaps you would care to capture one of them?~/
“No Abra. There’s no need.” Shadow’s mind wandered back. He closed his
eyes, thinking of a simpler time. Back before he was known as Shadow
Walker.
-Three years ago-
“Get out of here kid!”
“But…but...it’s all I have!”
“And it’s not enough! Now get lost before I call the cops!” The man
picked up Jason by the scruff of his neck and tossed him out the door.
Jason groaned, feeling the wind knocked out of him. Just as he landed on
the dirty, dusty ground, a boy about his age walked up, butler behind
him.
“Dear lord Jiles, what is this street urchin doing in front of me?” The
boy asked, pointing to Jason with a white-gloved finger.
“I do believe he wants a hand out sir. Shall I give him a nickel?”
“Yes yes, whatever it takes to move him.” The butler reached into his
pocket, and tossed a small coin in front of Jason’s face. Jason groaned,
and rolled over. The young boy standing above him smirked, and stepped
into the small building. After a few seconds, the boy stepped out, two
Pokeballs in his hands.
“Now I’ve got an Abra and a Scyther. That makes…twenty-two Pokemon in my
possession, does it not Jiles?”
“Correct, sir. Now come along, all the dust in this street is making
your clothes appear unsavory.”
The boy nodded and walked into a limousine, which left a cloud of dust
as it pulled away.
“Not…fair…supposed to be mine…” Jason sobbed into the street.
/~Why are you crying?~/
“Who’s there?” Jason lifted a tear-streaked face up, but didn’t see
anyone.
/~Don’t cry. I’ll be your friend. Look behind the dumpster.~/
Standing up, Jason stumbled his way over to the dumpster. Peering behind
it, he gasped as he found two Pokemon; an Abra and a Scyther.
“How…how did you talk to me like that?” Jason inquired, reaching out to
touch the Abra. Its companion, a young Scyther, growled, slicing in
front of Jason’s hand.
The Abra turned to its friend, holding up a small brown friend.
/~You are what humans call a psychic. Your powers are faint, but I can
still detect them. Both our parents were taken into the large building
next to you. We are….~/ The Abra stopped, struggling for the right word.
“Alone?” Abra nodded, and Scyther lowered its head sadly. Jason leaned
down on one knee, and placed one hand on the lizards’ shoulder. “I am
alone as well…my parents…are gone. But perhaps we can be together.”
The two Pokemon looked at each other, and nodded. Jason sighed, and
stood up. Scyther stood behind him, and Abra teleported to his shoulder.
/~Where shall we go now?~/
Jason struggled, and for the first time spoke directly to Abra with his
mind only.
/~We shall stay here for now, in this City. Someday, we will leave. But
for now, we shall remain here.~/
/~As you command, Master.~/ Abra bowed, as did Scyther.
“No Abra…don’t call me master. Call me…” Jason paused. It was a new life
for him, so he would need a new name. “Call me Shadow Walker.”
Shadow Walker and his two new Pokemon walked down the street, and into
the sunset. It was a new beginning for the three beings.
-End Flashback-
“Scyther…scy.” Scyther nudged Shadow with one claw gently.
“I’m alright Scyther. Just thinking about memories past. Now come on,
it’s time to go.”
“Scy?”
“That’s right. We’re going to Celadon City for a Rainbow Badge.”
