Subject: [PW!] Rematch with Surge (What? You wanted a creative title?)

"That's it, Pleiades, Water Gun! Good! Now, Avalanche, Dig underground..
quickly, quickly! There, great. I know, it won't hurt you to get a little
wet... you need to build up a tolerance for water. Okay now Pleiades, come
around for another attack... hang on Blueberry, I'm getting to you in a
second..."
It was rematch time. Lieutenant Surge, who had craftily taught his Raichu
Surf, had defeated Procyon's Diglett with just one attack. Procyon was
determined not to let it happen again. He was training hard, getting ready for
the next battle; because there was no way he was going to get beat twice by
someone who had called his friend ?baby'.
He turned to Blueberry. "All right, what's the big deal?"
The blue Pokemon hopped up and down excitedly. "Chansey, chansey chan chan!
Chansey!!"
He stared intently at the Chansey, trying to figure out what it was saying.
"Uh- huh. Uh-huh... all right then. So you're saying you want to look like a
Koffing?"
The Chansey sweatdropped and fell over. "Chan..."
"No, wait. I get it. You learned a new attack."
Blueberry hopped back up and nodded enthusiastically. "Chansey!!"
Procyon grinned. This was the third new attack one of his Pokemon had learned
today; earlier Bulletwing had learned Agility (which Procyon had kept,
replacing Peck) and his Staryu had learned Recover, something he was very happy
about. He was anxious to see what Blueberry had learned. He pointed his
Pro-dex at the Chansey and pushed a button.
"Metapod. Attacks: Harden."
He muttered something unprintable and tried again, pressing a different button
this time.
"Chansey. Attacks: Pound, Doubleslap, and Sing."
He smiled. "Sing, yes! That's an awesome attack. Lemme see, Blueberry!"
The blue blob that called itself a Pokemon smiled back at him and opened its
mouth wide. "Chan... chansey chan.... chansey chan... chan sey sey sey chan!"
it sang happily.
Procyon yawned, about to drift off, when he caught himself. "Great,
Blueberry! That'll come in really handy."
"Sey chansey?"
"No, you're not going to battle. I'm sending Avalanche in."
Taron was walking nearby, taking a break from his own rigorous training, and
overheard Procyon's comment. "Are you nuts?!" he said. "You're going to get
killed again! He'll just use Surf like last time, and then boom, no more
Diglett."
Procyon grinned. "Yeah, but I have an idea."
Taron winced. "The last time you got an ?idea' the only thing that saved you
was Bulletwing evolving."
"Heheh... yeah, but this time it's a *good* idea."
Taron just shook his head. "Suit yourself. This battle should be
interesting, anyway."
"Surge! I'm back!!"
Lt. Surge looked up from a book he was reading. Again? Didn't have enough
fun getting beat last time, so you've come back for more."
Procyon ignored the comment. "How many?"
He shrugged. "One on one again. I want to get back to my reading. I'm
gettin to a good part." He motioned towards the novel that had been in his
hand moments before. The cover read ?War and Peace.'
Procyon sweatdropped.
"What, do you think you're the only smart one around here? I'm literate too,
ya know."
Nodding quickly, Procyon walked to the opposite side of the gym. "Sure.
Let's just... battle."
"Prepare to lose, kiddo! Raichu, GO!"
Procyon smirked. "The infamous Surfing Raichu. Avalanche, GO!"
"Ah. I see you decided to evolve your Pokemon into a Dugtrio, then. Good
thinking, but you still won't..."
"Diglett!"
"WHAT?! You're challenging me with your puny little Diglett AGAIN?" He shook
his head. "You're almost as bad as that kid with the Pikachu."
"As I recall, that particular kid with the Pikachu kicked your sorry-"
"Yeah yeah, get on with it already."
Procyon smirked. "Avalanche, Sand-Attack!"
The little brown Pokemon stuck its head out of the ground a bit further, and
sprayed a stream of sand particles that blinded the Raichu momentarily. When
the sand cleared, it was blinking its eyes a bit.
"You didn't even Dig for your first move? Man, you're a goner, kid. Raichu,
you know what to do."
The Raichu nodded and a huge wall of water reared up over its head, crashing
down on the tiny Diglett with massive force.
The water ran harmlessly over the Pokemon's body. "Diglett!" it said.
"WHAT?!" cried Surge. "What happened? That should've KILLED your puny
Diglett!!"
Procyon grinned at him. Sweet revenge. "It missed."
Surge looked up, incredulous. "It MISSED?! How in the name of Lorelei can a
wave of water MISS? It crashed right over your Diglett! Water was everywhere!
How can Surf miss?!"
Procyon ran up to him and whispered something in his ear.
"Oh. Well, I guess that makes sense," said Surge. Procyon grinned.
"All right, Avalanche, Dig!"
"Raichu, run around a lot! Try to dodge the attack!"
The Raichu ran frantically in circles, trying to second-guess its opponent.
Meanwhile Procyon, still remembering vividly his battle against Brock, was
quite content to wait some time before giving the order to attack. He wouldn't
get many chances to see Surge nervous, he knew, and he wasn't about to pass
this one up.
After he decided that the opposing Raichu was sufficiently panicked, he gave
the order. "Avalanche, come up!"
There was a deep rumbling in the ground. The earth shook a bit, and one of
the windows shattered. Cracks began forming in the floor, then more and more,
as the Diglett made its approach to the surface. A moment later the earth
erupted beneath the Raichu's feet, sending it flying across the room. As the
shock wave cleared away the rubble, breaking several more windows, the dust
settled enough that Surge could see the Pokemon responsible for the attack in
the middle of all the debris.
"Diglett!" it said cutely.
"Rai..." groaned Raichu.
"Argh!!!!" said Surge. "How can a puny little Diglett have that much attack
power? That's not right..."
"I don't know, but at this point I think it's safe to say that there is
considerably more to Diglett than the eight inches we can see above ground,"
smirked Procyon. He took one look at the Raichu and knew the battle was over.
"Avalanche, return!"
"Return, Raichu." Surge sighed. "Well, I gotta hand it to you. That wasn't
too bad. Here, have a Thunder Badge."
"Thanks. Mind if I take a look at your Raichu now, so I can get a Pro-dex
entry for it?"
"Uh... whatever kid."
"Thanks a lot, mister!"
Five minutes and one entry later....
Procyon fingered his Thunder Badge with pride. "Well, Taron," he said,
"you're up!"
