"Maybe she wants him to get kidnapped. I can see it now- some dirty old man tells him to get in his van because there's candy inside..." "The only dirty one around here is you, Riley." The magnet train had arrived, two minutes early. A little odd, as such a new technology was bound to have twice as many delays as any other form of transportation. Riley lifted a sign reading 'Nicholas Jennings'. Jake gave him an odd look. "Riley, did it ever occur to you that this kid can't read?" "I could read when I was five." "You're three, Riley." "Uh... I meant five months." Among the crowd that stepped off the train was a young boy, looking about five, with red hair and green eyes. "Eh, that's gotta be him," Jake said "Hey! Over here!" "Huh?" the kid said. He walked over to Jake. "Welcome to Goldenrod, Nick!" "Who are you?" "I'm Jake Retwin, your mom sent me her-" Suddenly, an older woman snatched the kid by the hand. She pulled him away from Jake and hit him with her purse. "PERVERT!" she yelled. "Ah! Wait! It was a mistake!" "Hey, leave him alone," said another kid, this one with brown hair and blue eyes. "I know he's not very smart, but it was an honest mistake. Dr. Retwin, just apologize." "I... uh... I'm sorry." The woman slapped him in the faced and walked off with an arrogant stride, tugging her son along. "I'm not sure whether to thank you or strangle you, kid," Jake said. "I wouldn't suggest the latter. I'm Nick." "Nick? Nicholas? Oh! Welcome to Goldenrod!" Jake said, quickly standing up. As he stood up, he saw a young woman stop next to Jake. Since he wasn't at eye level, he didn't recognize her. Instead, he stared at her lar- "Jake, my face is up here!" Katherine yelled. "Hm?! Oh... sorry..." Jake said sheepishly. He stood up and held his hand out. "Jake Retwin, PhP." "I already know you Jake." Katherine said with an annoyed look. "So what brings you here? I thought Nicholas was traveling alone." "I decided to come with him. It's not very safe for a five-year-old to travel alone, I'm glad I didn't make that mistake. And besides, I wanted to see what Johto was like." "Well... it's not much different from Kanto, except for Pokemon. Most of the chain stores are centered here, so there's some bigger shopping centers, but that's about it." "Will you two quit talking and get moving?!" Nicholas yelled. "Nicholas! Don't be rude!" Katherine yelled. "Fine. But can we get going?" "My lab's not far from here," Jake said.
