"Alright, one more time, Wooper," Jake yelled. Wooper stood at the
opposite end of the room next to Riley.
"Wooooo..."
"Ok, now take a deep breath... now, water gun!"
"WOOP!" the Wooper yelled. Otherwise, nothing happened.
"I’ve reached my limit, Riley," Jake said as he drooped his shoulders.
"Which limit, the one on how much time you’d give Wooper or the on on
how long it’d take you to stop caring?"
"Both. I think it’s your turn."
"MY TURN?! I’m not the one trying to adopt this thing!" Riley
protested as Jake walked into the adjacent room."Hey! Don’t just blow me
off like that! What kind of treatment is that! Hey! HEY!! I MADE YOU BREAKFAST
THIS MORNING!!"
As Riley continued to shout, Jake sat down in front of the television. He
grabbed the remote and began to slouch. Just his usual midday routine.
"Coming up next, Scooby Doo!"
"Ooh!" Jake exclaimed. He had never really liked cartoons, especially
not Scooby Doo, but it sure beat the usual talk shows and soap operas. Just as
the theme song was beginning to play, the phone rang. Jake continued watching
as the phone rang. Finally, it began to annoy him.
"Riley! Get the phone!"
"I’m busy here!" Riley yelled from the other room. "Either way
I’m not your secretary! You get it!"
"But you’re closer!"
"Alright, alright!" Riley yelled as he gave up the argument. If he
hadn’t put an end to it, it would have gone on for at least another hour,
even after the phone had stopped ringing.
"Hey, Jake, it’s for you. Some lady from Kanto."
"Long distance, huh? Is she calling about your brain surgery?"
"Are you the-" Riley stopped as he realized what Jake had just said.
“Oh, funny, Jake!"
"Heh... ok, I’ll talk to her." Jake walked over to the lab’s waiting
room and took the phone from Riley. Riley quickly smacked him and ran back to
the other room.
"This is Dr. Retwin speaking. How may I help you?"
"Jake? Jake, it’s really you?" the woman said, somewhat excited. Jake
couldn’t help but smile at a dirty thought.
"Uh... unless I’ve gone crazy, yeah, it’s me. Who’s this?"
"It’s Katherine Jennings. Do you remember me?"
"Uh..." Jake quickly looked through his address book, but found no
match."Sorry, no."
"Oh... well, I don’t really blame you. I was your brother’s best
friend."
"My brother? You mean ...Ian?" Jake wasn’t sure why, but he was
reluctant to mention his brother’s name, almost as if Trent were in the room
and staring at him menacingly.
"Yes... Ian. Ok, I’ll be quick, I’m not exactly in the best of
situations right now, but would it be alright if my son paid you a visit?"
"A son already?" Jake was beginning to remember Katherine, who was about
Trent’s age, which would make her about 24."Well, sure. If you don’t
mind me asking, why is he coming?"
"He’s starting his badge journey. He’s only five, but he’s very
mature for his age."
"I don’t know," Jake said with a pause."I’m not sure if he’ll
be allowed to. I’ll have to check."
"Well... even if he’s not qualified, can he stay with you for a few
days?"
"I don’t see why not. Are you in some hurry to get him to leave? He must
be a pain in the butt." Katherine giggled slightly.
"No, he’s well-mannered and obedient... it’s just that his father’s
been going through some... changes over the years and he might come back to
hurt us." Jake could tell that she wasn’t very comfortable talking about
it.
"I... I see... so when should I be expecting little..."
"Nicholas. He’ll be there in a few days. He’ll be arriving at the
Goldenrod Magnet Train Station."
"Alright... I’ll make note of it."
"Thanks, Jake. This means a lot to me."
"Anytime, Katherine. If you need anything, just call me back, alright?"
"Alright, thanks, bye."
"Who was that?" Riley asked as he entered the room.
"Beats me."
No, Jake doesn't realize that he's related to Nicholas. Then again, neither do
you guys. I wonder if anyone actually follows my continuity...
