But did not get very far before Solo noticed something.
"Hey, there's somebody following us," he whispered to Amber. Amber began to
turn around when Jason stopped her.
"Don't turn around and look, wait til we get around this next corner." He
subtly gestured with his head to an alley off to the side of the Pokéon
Center. The group rounded the corner and pressed themselves against the
wall. Jason stood nearest the corner, listening to the approaching footsteps
of their stalker.
"Why are we doing this? Couldn't we just have..." But she was interupted
when Jason leapt out of the alleyway, right in front of the figure who was
just coming into view.
"BOOGA BOOGA!!"
"Ahh! Sonofa-" *wham* Jason staggered backwards from the hard backhand to
the face he received. Lance stood with his hand still up, breathing heavily.
Amber screamed and ran to Jason.
"What the hell did you jump out like that for? Were you trying to mug me or
something?" The leader of the Elite Four snarled at Jason, who had a hand up
to his face.
"Dammit! That hurt!" the injured youth said, "Do you wear a ring or
something?" He refused Amber's efforts to help. He pulled his hand away from
his face and looked at his palm. "Lucky for you there's no blood. I'd sue!
Do you know how much this face is worth?"
"Lucky for me? That was completely your fault!" Lance was spitting with
rage.
"Was not!"
"Quit it!" Amber said, stepping between them. "Don't make me open a can of
whoop ass on you two, cause I'm still not used to these glasses and I might
hit somewhere sensitive. That is, with all due respect sir." This last part
she directed to Lance. He calmed down and nodded to her.
"Of course. Now, I know you're wondering why I'm following you..."
"Yeah!" Jason yelled, leaping forward. "Why were you following us? Do you
want a doggie treat or something? Is that it boy? Do you want a treat? Huh?
Huh?" He grinned at the professional trainer.
Lance glared back at him. "Do you want me to backhand you again?"
Jason dropped his head. "Sorry sir."
"Anyways, to answer your question..." Amber took his pause to mean that he
wanted her name.
"Amber."
"..Amber, I have been following you because I have a favor to ask of you. I
need you to take a message to a friend of mine in Ecruteak."
"What?" Jason interrupted, "Deliver a letter? Do we look like a Dragonite,
Ditto, and Meowth to you?"
"Shut up before I hurt you."
"Point."
"Jason does have a point though," Amber chimed in, "Why not hire a normal
delivery service?"
"Okay I'll be honest with you," Lance adjusted the cape on his shoulders and
shuffled his feet about. "The last few delivery services I've used, the
messenger...disappeared. Nobody has any idea what happened to them, and
we're not quite sure how to handle this. So, I'd like to ask you people to
help me out with this. You seem to be, resourceful to say the least. So I
have no doubt in my mind that you'll find a way to get the message to its
destination. You will be well compensated for your troubles. "
"Why have us do it? Why not you? You had enough time on your hands to stalk
us all day." Amber asked.
"Really," Lance rolled his eyes, "Traveling by foot from city to city takes
a lot more time that following around a group of kids for a few hours."
"Months." Solo chimed in.
Everyone turned to look at him. "What?" Lance asked.
Solo looked back at his watch, tapped the face, held it up to his ear and
shook it. "Never mind."
Everyone shook thier heads slightly, as if to get rid of that brief
experience. Lance held out his hand to Amber.
"So, if all your questions are answered..." Jason opened his mouth, but
Amber shot him a look and he closed it quickly. "Then I ask you to accept
the job."
Amber gently took his hand in her paw, and the sun glinted off her
sunglasses. "Mister Lance, sir. You've got yourself a deal."
