Smasher picked up Pikat-Shoo, his Pikachu, and looked him over. "So, how do I ride a Pikachu?" he asked. "Well, I've had him put out a fire once," Smasher recalled. "But I've never actually had to use it to swim. By the time I wanted to challenge the Cinnibar Gym, I could just use StarScream to Fly there, and we took Amber's Rhydon to Seafoam Island. But now we're here, and there isn't a ferry in site." "Are you sure?" Rush asked. "Maybe that guy over there knows how to get across." "Hey, you there!" Smasher called out to the guy Rush pointed to. "Is there a boat or something around here?" "Not that I know of," the guy said. "And I hang around here all the time, telling Johto trainers that they've just entered Kanto." "Why?" Rush asked. "Couldn't they just put up a sign or something?" "They could," the guy admitted. "But then who'd tell them to check their maps? They change when you change regions, you know." "They could put that on the sign," Smasher said. "Listen, you," the guy said. "They're paying me good money to tell people this stuff! Don't go rocking my boat, you hear?" "Okay, fine," Smasher said defensively. "No need to go postal or anything." "Pi pikachu, pi!" Pikat-Shoo said. "He's requesting permission to speak, sir!" Rush translated and imitated. "Granted," Smasher replied. "Pika pikapi pikachu pikapikachu, pi!" Pikat-Shoo said. "He says we should build a boat, sir!" Rush translated. "That's a good idea," Smasher said. "But if we built a boat, then we wouldn't need to use Surf. Besides, I don't think any of my Pokemon know Cut." "Okay," Rush said. "What if we Fly on StarScream until we get to New Bark Town?" "We haven't been to New Bark yet," Smasher said. "So?" "So we can't Fly somewhere unless we've been there already. We have to know where it is first." "We could just follow the waterway." "We could... but I just figured out how to use Surf. All I need is some rope, a bit of duct tape, my skateboard, and Pikat-Shoo." "Sounds like a recipe for disaster." "Oh! And my video camera!" "Now it just sounds sick." "Get your mind out of the gutter." Smasher took off his backpack and began to dig around. In moments, Shuriken was hovering behind him with the camera, and Smasher had duct taped his foot to his skateboard. "Remember the time you duct taped your feet and some rockets to your 'board?" Rush inquired. "Yeah, we wound up on Giant Primeape Island," Smasher said as he tied the rope around Pikat-Shoo's waist. "But *this* plan won't go up in smoke. Now, return to your PokeBall" Smasher returned Rush to his PokeBall and turned to Shuriken. "Camera rolling?" Shuriken bobbed in confirmation. "Cool. All right. Here we are, about to Surf over to New Bark Town using my Pikachu. The plan is to have him drag me by this rope while I use my skateboard as a wakeboard. If all goes well, we should be in New Bark by night fall. Ready, Pikat-Shoo?" "Pika pika, pi!" Pikat-Shoo confirmed. "All right! Go for it!" Pikat-Shoo leapt into the water and used his Surf attack to propel himself. "New Bark Town, HOOO-WHOA!!!" The unexpected amount of force yanked Smasher off his feet and into the water, where he was dragged at high speed on his face. Shuriken sunk in embarrassment and shut off the camera. After getting back to shore and drying off a little, Smasher was ready for action again. "Okay," he said into the camera. "The first try didn't go so well, but we're ready for a second go. This time, I'm going to have Pikat-Shoo go a bit slower so I can ease into it. Ready, Pikat-Shoo?" "Pika pika, pi!" "Then let 'er rip!" Pikat-Shoo leapt into the water again and used his Surf technique. Smasher was slowly dragged into the water on his skateboard. This time, instead of skimming across the water, Smasher sunk like a stone. "Go faster! Pikat-Shoo! Go fastablubblublublub...." Shuriken turned off the camera again, only to turn it back on a while later. "Right," Smasher said into the camera again. "Third time's the charm. I've braced myself against a rock while having Pikat-Shoo Surf for a while so I could get used to the pull. I should have everything under control now. Do it, Pikat-Shoo!" "Pika pika, pi!" Pikat-Shoo dragged Smasher into the water again. This time, Smasher was able to ride behind him flawlessly. Shuriken videotaped them as they Surfed around, whooping and hollering. Then they disappeared behind a rock, followed by loud crack and a scream of pain. Shuriken dropped the camera and went off to investigate. That evening, Smasher was videotaping himself in front of a bathroom mirror. "Well, we made it to New Bark Town," Smasher said, scratching at the bandages on his head. "I guess we were fortunate that another group of trainers with a Blissey and a Gyarados were able to help out. Nurse Joy says that Pikat-Shoo only suffered minor injuries and my concussion wasn't too serious, so we should be ready to train in the morning. All in all, I'd have to say that it was a good day.
