Subject: [PW!] [WC] [R1] Day Two, Match 4: Seaking? Checkmate! Date: 7 Dec 2002 14:32:14 -0800 From: Hvnbnd2307@hotmail.com (Brome) Organization: http://groups.google.com/ Newsgroups: alt.games.nintendo.pokemon Brome was rather tense as his battle approached. Sure, he'd been in a few gym battles before, but never in an arena as crowded as this one. For the millionth time he wished that he had his familiar headband on, but he had removed all gear lest he lose it in the waters of the arena. Now it was only him and Remoraid. "I hope Remoraid learned enough from the short training I've been doing", he thought. Sooner than he may have liked, a guard tapped him on the shoulder. "Brome? Brome Taylor? You're up next." Brome sighed, squared his shoulders, and marched out to take his place in the arena. He was somewhat comforted when he spotted Scizor warming his seat for him. Brome waved halfheartedly, then stopped less anybody notice that he was shaking. He tried to study his opponent, in between struggling just to remain standing. Her name was Daisy, he knew that much. The fact that she was from the Cerulean Gym didn't phaze him - he had already faced Gym Leaders before. As for how experienced her Pokemon were... Well, that he would look forward to finding out. Currently she was more worried about smiling and waving than anything else. Brome doubted that she even realized that her opponent was already present. "And now," the announcer blared, "we have Daisy, of the Cerulean City Gym, battling Brome of Cianwood City!" Brome licked his lips nervously, and his anxiety wasn't helped any by Daisy's sly wink in his general direction. Hoping his voice wouldn't crack, he announced, "I choose Remoraid!" Daisy produced her Pokeball with a flourish and said, "And I totally choose Seaking!" The matchup appeared on the board, and the announcer ranted about possible strategy for the upcoming battle. Brome didn't hear him, of course, he was poised to react to whatever was coming next. Daisy took the opportunity to strike first. "Seaking, use a Horn Drill!" "Like I'm gonna go out THAT easy! Remoraid, dodge it and Psybeam that Seaking!" Miraculously, Remoraid seemed to understand his trainer for once, as he dodged and fired. Just to show that the old Remoraid remained, however, Remoraid dodged as only he would - straight down. The resulting psybeam lifted the Seaking out of the water much as a hydrofoil would a ship. Brome threw himself flat as a Seaking almost as big as him flew over his head, landing with a splash in the water behind him. Remoraid surfaced, looking supremely pleased with himself. The Seaking, however, was not happy. "Seaking, use Supersonic like, now!" The enraged Seaking emitted a screech that almost deafened Brome. "For goodness sakes, Remoraid, at least move so he doesn't try to Supersonic ME too!" Of course, Remoraid couldn't hear a word in the ruckus the Seaking was causing, but was at least curious enough to go over and see what the other fish was up to. Brome sweatdropped. <On the plus side, Remoraid's too confused already to be confused any further. On the minus side, I've got to DEAL with it!> "Remoraid, use Aurora Beam!" Seaking had stopped trying to confuse his strange opponent by now, but he was still ticked from being slighted earlier. "Seaking, use Horn Attack!" Remoraid, who had decided that he was swimming too slow, took that particular moment to use a Surf attack to speed things up a bit, momentarily oblivious to his trainer's commands. This didn't help, as Seaking simply rode UP the wave and whacked Remoraid with the side of his horn as he passed. This knocked enough sense into him to at least wonder why his trainer wasn't giving him any orders. Brome, unfortunate soul that he is, had still been in the line of fire as his Remoraid decided to Surf its way over to the Seaking. This meant a deluge of water that he was relatively helpless to avoid. <In retrospect,> he thought as the wave approached, <it was a GOOD decision to leave my PokeGear with Scizor.> The wave doused him, and he went underwater. Now acting on it's own will (or lack thereof), Remoraid decided to use the last thing it had heard of. As the Seaking turned and headed for another Horn Attack, Remoraid opened it's mouth and began to charge a whitish ball. "Like, Seaking, dodge! That's totally an Aurora Beam!" Too late. Remoraid discharged a rainbow spectrum of color directly at the oncoming Seaking. Seaking, looking as surprised as a fish can, reacted and was only hit partially by the beam. It was enough to freeze his horn, however, which amounts to about the same as an ice headache in a human. Brome struggled back onto his platform, dripping wet. He looked up just in time to see the Seaking, now hurting as well as enraged, scoop his Remoraid up and throw it at him. He reacted barely in time, catching his fish. However, he went over into the water again, sending Daisy into spasms of laughter. <At least SHE'S sure she'll win.> Brome thought angrily. He realized that he had lost his grip on Remoraid, and wondered briefly what it would do next without him to issue commands. Seaking had taken quite enough by now, and it was no longer able to take commands from a master who was currently giggling too hard to stand up. Taking matters into its own fins, the Seaking decided to use Waterfall on the errant Remoraid upstart. Remoraid was still operating on its last command, and it formed another Aurora Beam. This time, the Seaking was too busy to dodge, and the Beam, while a bit off, was enough to freeze the huge crested wave that had been about to pour on Remoraid's head. Unfortunately for Seaking and Daisy, Seaking happened to be on top of the wave. Now suspended several dozen feet in the air on a frozen platform, Seaking had nowhere to go, flapping about ineffectually. Daisy sobered right up, just as Brome managed to clamber back onto his platform and drop on his face, gasping for breath. "Oh NO! Seaking, like RETURN!" Daisy recalled Seaking, who was clearly unable to do anything, even as simple as getting back to the water. "Seaking has been recalled! The win goes to BROME!" The announcer screamed. Gathering the energy to raise his head, Brome managed to grin. "I...won? Oh good." He dropped his head back onto the platform. His head snapped right back up. "Wait a minute. I WON!" Standing up on shaky legs, Brome recalled Remoraid. "Remoraid, you actually won against a Gym Leader!" Brome noticed that Daisy had crossed to his platform. He shook her hand, and congratulated her on having a Pokemon that actually LISTENED.
