As Robert reached the polkecenter he was almost struck by the door, which
opened to reveal Travis. "Hey, dude, you are out early." Travis said in
greeting. "I saw you earlier headed out to the beach, but you looked pretty
out of it. Sleep walking almost."
"You are out pretty early yourself, if you saw me heading out there."
Robert responded genially. "What were you doing out so early?"
"Actually, I was just returning." Travis answered. "I slept out on the
beach in a small stand of trees last night. I was on my way back to wake
Becky when i saw you."
"I see!" Robert said knowingly. With a wink and a friendly elbow to the
ribs, he went on, "So what was her name? Anyone I know? Was it that blonde
karate girl?"
"Nothing like that." Travis assured him. "I just had something I needed to
take care of, and by the time it was done, it was just easier to sleep out
there."
"I see." Robert replied disappointed that he didn't get a juicy bit of
gossip.
"So what were you up to this morning?"
"Oh! I won a gym badge!" Robert replied showing off his new prize so
enthusiastically he almost dumped the Mukrow riding his shoulder off his
perch. "I fought the gyn leader Chuck first thing. This little fellow here
finished off Chuck's Machoke to earn me the badge."
"Ah, that is what he was doing out there. I saw Chuck when I was riding in.
I never thought about challenging any of the Gym leaders while they were
here. I've never had a gym match before."
"Never?" Robert asked surprised. "You pokemon are remarkably well behaved,
then. How is it that you have never competed in a gym match? What, do you
play second fiddle to that friend of yours?"
"Becky has never been in a gym match either." Travis informed him. "We have
traveled and trained for a few years now. I figured I would raise my
pokemon to decent fighting strengths, then sweep the gym's one after
another just before the league championships. That way I would enter with a
relatively unknown team."
"Interesting stragety." Robert commented. Before he could comment further,
his stomach growled audibly. "Oh! I haven't had breakfast yet! Time to go
in and see what is on the menu!"
"Go on ahead." Travis replied pulling the door open for him. "Becky should
be down shortly. I'm going to run over to Oldman's for a second, then
perhaps we will join you for breakfast."
