[Well, quite a long departure, wasn't it? Seems like nearly everyone else is
gone, too. Maybe it's just my imagination. Anyway, I'm hoping to start up here
again...but that's what I said the last time. Maybe I'll just get to the
story.]
A light breeze blew through the trees around Pallet Town. The sky was a
glowing orange above, the clouds casting dark shadows on it.
Dan watched the shadows move across the sky, noting a connection between him
and the scene. The sun was setting on what was, and a new adventure would be
dawning...
A different shadow now swept across the orange field, one unlike any of the
clouds. Different especially because of the loud call coming from it...
"PIIDGEOOOOTTTT!!"
"Well, it's about time!" Dan shouted as the large bird landed on the lawn.
"You've scoped it out, right?"
Pidgeot nodded.
"Think you can make it back?"
Pidgeot sighed.
"Ugh...I wish I could control that Ditto, then I could just transform into a
helicopter or something," Dan grumbled, pulling out a can and popping it open.
"Here, drink this. It'll recover a bit of your strength."
Pidgeot slowly drank the refreshing lemonade from the can.
"All right, now take these vitamins. They'll make you stronger."
Pidgeot snatched the pills from Dan's hand and gulped them down.
"Feel better?"
"Pidgeoooooooooott!" he called, spreading his wings.
"All right! Let's go!" Dan jumped on the bird's back. "Now, to Violet!"
"PIDGEOOOOOOOOOOT!!" The bird began to beat its wings, contributing to the
still-present breeze, and rose into the air.
--------
Dust flew up from the ground and into another orange sky as the Pokemon
floated downward. The sun, which had set upon Dan's departure, was now rising.
"That was a lot faster than I thought it would be," Dan said, jumping off
Pidgeot's back. "What do you think?"
Silence.
"Huh," he mumbled, looking toward the Pokemon Center in the path ahead.
"Guess I'd better get you fixed up."
--
"Oh, what's wrong with this one?" asked the Joy at the front desk of the
Pokecenter.
"Did a little too much flying," Dan explained. "Just needs to rest for a
while."
"It looks absolutely exhausted! Don't worry, we'll take real good care of
it!"
The doors of the back room burst open, and a stretcher pushed by two
Chanseys appeared. The Pokemon healers lifted the bird onto the stretcher and
pushed it back into the back room.
"Your Pidgeot needs lots of rest," Joy told Dan. "We'll be keeping him here
for a while."
Dan whirled around and stared at the front door for a few minutes, thinking
over his next move. There wasn't much to think over, though, as he had no next
move at the moment.
After a bit, his eyes began to sweep the room, watching for something to
trigger an idea.
On one side of the lobby, there was a semi-tall man in a business suit
tugging on a briefcase. On the other end of the case was a Growlithe with its
teeth firmly clamped onto the leather covering. "Let go! I need to get these
papers to the office by nine!" the man shouted, his voice strained. "You're
ruining the cover, you dumb dog!"
Meanwhile, a short, nerdy-looking kid was sitting at the PC, searching for
information. "Preliminary Studies on Electromechanical Dynamics in Magnetic
Pokemon," the screen read.
"Sounds very interesting," Dan thought, his eyes wandering again. They
continued on to the other side of the room, until one sight fixed them in their
sockets.
She was sitting by the window, a set of papers in front of her on the table.
Her long brown hair cascaded down her shoulders, and shone in the sunlight. Her
figure was covered by a blue dress that went down to just below her knees. She
tapped her bright red fingernails on the table, her brown eyes staring down
thoughtfully at the papers before her.
Much like his eyes had been, Dan was wandering around the room, gradually
getting closer to the girl at the window. Meanwhile, the girl was scribbling
something down on another piece of paper beside her.
"Huh?" She looked up from the table to see Dan watching near her. "What? Do
you want something?" Her head was tilted questioningly with her pen under her
chin.
Ignoring the answer that immediately came to mind, Dan told her, "Oh,
nothing. I was just..." He stopped as he tried to think of something that
wouldn't give her the wrong idea. Unfortunately, he just wasn't fast enough.
"...staring at me?" she offered. Her eyes narrowed slightly.
"Staring? At you? What gave you that idea?"
A smile began to form on her lips as she replied, "Come on. You couldn't
take your eyes off of me!"
Dan shook his head quickly.
The girl rose from her seat and advanced toward Dan. "Come on! Admit it!"
she laughed. "You don't have to hide it! I don't mind!"
Dan's eyes shifted back and forth as he tried to think of something to do to
get out of this. It was then that he noticed what was on the table, an Eon Mail
set. "Mail...the post office..." he whispered to himself.
"Huh?"
Dan sprinted out the Pokecenter door, leaving the confused girl standing at
the table. "Will you be back?.."
Dan was soon racing down the sidewalk, saying to himself, "The post office!
Of course, that's where Dad mailed his letter, they have to know something!"
------------------
"The post office! Whose bright idea was it to search the post office?!" Dan
grumbled as he stormed out of the gray stone building. He was about to turn
down the sidewalk and head back to the Pokecenter when he noticed two figures
talking in an alley nearby.
Dan silently snuck along the front of the post office building and listened
to what the two were saying...
"Goldenrod City, Randy, Goldenrod City," one of them said. "That's where
they said the guy was going."
"Sure, that's what they said - then," the other replied. "But how do we know
he's still there now?"
"The monitors have no record of his departure from the city," the first
answered. "He's been there for weeks and his guard is down. It's the perfect
time to strike!"
"Well then, Curt, you'd better be right... hey! Who's that around the
corner?"
"Someone's spying on us! Let's get him!"
