The Whirl Islands, a random grouping of islands inhabited by nothing
more than visiting trainers and wild Pokemon. And mystery, lots of
that.
"Where ARE we?", Brome Taylor asked his Scizor.
Scizor merely glared.
"Yeah, yeah. I know about my sense of direction already. How was I
suppose to know that the water would short out my Pokedex?"
"Scizor, sciz."
"Yes I DID study basic electronics in my free time. Why?"
"Scizor, zor sciz. Or."
"Whadday mean, 'Duh'? Of COURSE I know that water shorts out
electronics...oh. Um, never mind. Where are we again?"
Scizor rolled his eyes and continued helping his trainer look for a
way out. They had been trapped in one of the Whirl Islands' smaller
caves for awhile now, as Brome kept going in circles. Brome's Noctowl
had yet to return with news of any ways out, and Scizor personally
believed that she was perching somewhere nearby laughing her sciz-ing
head off at their route.
Brome walked onward, muttering to himself. "Of course I know where I'm
going, I remember what that map said way back at home. I kinda
remember. Sorta. OK, fine, I'm lost. Whatever." With that, he fell
silent. This trip wasn't even turning out to be of any use so far. His
Pokedex had gotten soaked from an earlier fall in the water battling
another trainer on the way to the islands, even though it was in a
"waterproof" bag. "Dang it. I KNEW I should have used a thicker trash
bag to wrap that in." So far Brome had found nothing of value, save an
old fishing rod someone had left behind. From the looks of it, the
thing might even have washed up at the mouth of the cave where Brome
found it.
"Noct! Noctowl!", came a cry.
As Brome looked up, his Noctowl came fluttering back to land on a rock
formation a few feet in front of him.
"Noctowl, did you find anything?"
Noctowl nodded her head. She pointed a wing in a direction (heck if
Brome knew which direction it was) and took off into the air again.
"Uh...follow Noctowl!"
"Or."
"WHAT was that?"
Scizor just crossed his claws and trudged behind his trainer as Brome
layed the fishing rod over his shoulder and walked off.
-----
Shortly thereafter, Noctowl finally led them to somewhere they HADN'T
seen a million times before. Before them, in a cave whose ceiling
actually leaked light here and there, was a good-sized pool.
Immediately, Brome started thinking.
"You don't suppose there's Pokemon in that pool, do you?"
"Or."
"You're getting a little short on vocabulary today. It was a
rhetorical question, by the way. I'm gonna see if I can find any
Pokemon here."
So saying, Brome took the rickety fishing rod that he had found and
began to try and piece together a line from some string that he pulled
out of his pocket. When he found it to be acceptably jury-rigged, he
tried a few casts. First try, nothing. Second try...no.
Brome kept trying, having nothing better to do. No bait, no nothing,
just in and out of the water. Any Pokemon that bit on THAT rod would
have to be really stupid...
"I've got something!" Brome cried excitedly as his rod began to jerk.
It was pretty obvious that the string would hold longer than the rod
would, but he continuted to pull anyway. Pretty soon the Pokemon began
to be reeled in as it lost the strength to fight someone who insisted
on holding on. Brome finally got a glimpse of the Pokemon he was going
to try to catch, too.
"Karp, karp. Magikarp!" croaked the Magikarp. Brome sighed. "Alright,
Scizor, just go bonk it on the head or something."
Scizor complied, and soon the Magikarp was looking distinctly
cross-eyed. Brome chose to try catching it now. "Pokeball, GO!" The
ball hit, and Magikarp was sucked into it in a hazy red glow. The
Pokeball had no trouble containing it's new cargo.
"Well, I caught a new Pokemon, but I'm not exactly excited about it."
Scizor had a hard time keeping a straight face, and Noctowl was busy
laughing herself off her perch. Brome walked over and picked up his
Pokeball. He let the Magikarp out, just to take a closer look at it.
Another flash of light, and the Magikarp was flopping on the ground in
front of him.
"Pretty slimy, aren't you?" Brome said as he tried to pick it up.
"Karp, Magikarp." the Pokefish responded. Scizor, trying to act as a
translator, just moved one of his claws in a circular direction next
to his head.
"Just plain nuts? Great."
Seeing as how his Pokedex was temporarily out of service, Brome
decided to risk giving his Pokemon a name without knowing its gender.
"You're going to be...Scale."
Scizor grunted his disapproval, but Brome just shrugged. "Eh, I've got
high hopes that it'll grow into the name, what can I say?" With that
he recalled Scale and turned towards Scizor and Noctowl. "So, any
other ways out?"
--------------
Eventually (no thanks to their trainer) the Pokemon managed to find a
safe passage back out to the sea, where they all found that it was
fast approaching nightfall. As much as he hated to bring out Remoraid
again, Brome called the fish out and "saddled" it.
"Scizor, you're staying dry. Return!" Scizor disappeared inside his
ball with a grateful look on his face. Rest at last...
"Noctowl, you have to stay out a little longer. Um...fly above me and
make sure I'm going towards home, alright?" Noctowl gave an owlish
smile and took off, sensing air currents. Brome gave his Remoraid the
command to start surfing, and took off as well.
Along the way home, he heard from others returning to Cianwood that
there was to be a Water Pokemon competition somewhere. Each time he
heard about it, he thought, "I'll have to find out more about this
once I finally get home." The first thing he did, of course, was have
Scale checked out at the Pokecenter, where he also managed to get his
Pokedex fixed. "Now, what was this about a competition?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hmm. How was that? I'm short on interaction, I know. However, I'm
still checking out my writing skills (or lack thereof), so feel free
to critique. I'll try to "bump into" some people after the upcoming
competition. By the way, Scale is level 7. I didn't quite know if
that's able to be included in the story, but I assumed not.
