"....And we have big news from Violet City!" the ultra cheerful voice of Mary
came from Becky's pokegear. "All you female trainers out there will be glad to
hear this juicy bit of gossip. it seems that Falkner, Gym Leader of the Violet
City Gym has finally found himself a girlfriend! it seems the Flying type's
heart is soaring these days as he paints the town red with young Pokefan
Irene!"
"T-t-thank goodness for t-t-that!" Sarah stated. "Maybe now he wont be
stalking me when i go through town!"
"Stalking you?" Becky asked, interested
"Y-y-yes, every time I have been to his Gym, h-h-he asks m-m-m-me to go on a
d-d-date with him." Sarah explained. "He w-was downright r-rude the last time,
w-when i defeated h-him for the Zephyr badge!" Sarah had discovered the badge
when she went to remove the Hive badge from her satchel to show her fellow
trainers. She had felt very silly that winning it had slipped her mind,
especially since it was that battle that allowed Barbie enough experience and
confidence to evolve.
"Yeah, he does that with all the female trainers." Drake supplied. "The league
was about to step in and censure him because of it. I guess he is lucky he
found a girlfriend."
"At any rate, we shouldn't be in town long enough to cross his path." Travis
said. "At least not on this trip. I can't battle him until I become
registered. We should only be in Violet long enough to stop by the pokemart
and re supply. The it is off to see nurse joy in New Bark and get me
official."
"A-are you g-g-going to v-visit Professor E-elm?" Sarah asked.
Travis appeared slightly surprised by the question. "We can if you would like
to." He answered. "Do you have some business with him?" He asked
"N-no, i m-mean so y-you can g-get your official s-starter p-p-pokemon." Sarah
answered. "Although it w-w-ould be n-nice to see h-him again."
"You know, i hadn't thought about that." Travis replied. "I may not be
eligible for a pokemon from him considering that I already have a fairly full
team. Not to mention that i already got Hoofer as an egg from Professor Ivy
when i started my pokemon journey in the Orange islands."
"You started your journey with an egg?" Drake asked surprised.
'Yep." Travis answered. "It took months for Hoofer to hatch. I never knew what
pokemon was going to hatch from the egg, but I couldn't have asked for a
better starter pokemon than Hoofer. He was a little Ponyta when he first came
to the world, but he has grown strong and well."
"How did you handle wild pokemon?" Drake asked
"Well, I didn't at first." Travis answered. "Mostly i avoided everything until
I found Rapid. She called out to me in my mind. Her former trainer had staked
her out to die because she doesn't want to evolve. "Travis expression grew
dark at the memory of the Slowpoke tied to a rock in the blazing island
sunlight, half dead of hunger and thirst before he had found her. "I freed
her, and she joined me. But she refuses to battle. Instead she helps me out as
a translate and helps me identify pokemon with moves in the wild that they
normally don't know.
"Why Slowpoke not want to evolve?" Mimic asked.
"She has this idea in her head that if she evolves she wont be the same person
she is now." Travis explained. "I keep trying to convince her that it is the
experience and memory that makes up the person, or pokemon, but she aint
buying it."
"So you had a pokemon egg and a Slowpoke that refused to battle." Drake said
dragging the conversation back.
"Yeah." Travis went on. "About a week after finding Rapid, we were down at a
beach. I had taken Rapid to a pokemon center for treatment, and Nurse Joy
healed her up, but suggested that some time in the ocean would complete the
healing process. While there, a Tentacool came up on the beach after a
Corsola. Rapid told me that the Tentacool knew Reflect, and I saw that in
action when the Tentacool used the move to counter the Spikes attack that
Corsola tried to defend itself with. The Tentacool won the battle and had the
Corsola for lunch. I tried to catch the Tentacool in a pokeball, but she was
to strong and broke out.
"Not having a pokemon to battle the Tentacool, but determined to have her, I
had to stalk her for weeks until she lost a battle in the wild." Travis
continued. "Finally she fought a Mantine who wanted to do to her what she did
to the Corsola, but at the last second, i captured her in the pokeball. She
had been sufficiently weakened so that the pokeball held her. I was very lucky
that she fought the Mantine close enough to shore so that I could make the
catch. Of course, the Mantine wasn't very happy about it, and I had to run
like heck after i got my pokeball back. i took her to the pokecenter to get
healed after her fight with the Mantine, and Tendril was the first pokemon i
had captured."
"And she was so grateful that she immediately took to you for saving her."
Drake supplied with an edge to his voice that was totally lost on Travis
.
"Oh no!" Travis answered. "She didn't like me very much. She never saw it as
me saving her from being eaten, just that i had been opportunistic. Tendril
would battle for me, but she often disobeyed my orders, even losing because of
it. it wasn't until after Hoofer hatched and she saw me with him that she
began to warm up to me. Now, though, she is a great pokemon, and one I am
honored to call a friend.
'I-i feel sorry for that C-c-corsola." Sarah stated sadly
"Yeah, i did too." Travis replied. "Plus a Corsola with Spikes is very rare
too, so i wanted to capture it, but Tendril was to fast for me. Still it was
fascinating to see nature in action. I still let tendril out to hunt what she
would like when we are near water."
Sarah was going to make a reply, but was forestalled as Mimic pointed out that
they had arrived at Violet. Becky took out their list for needed supplies as
the group made their way to the poke mart....
