"I follow all rules to the letter, and have never broken even the
smallest of laws. That includes driving regulations; according to my
driving examiner, my driving skills are amongst the best that he'd ever
seen. I value all people equally, and I feel that everyone has a right to a
long and happy life."
-- from Ralph Harrison's application form to join ComComCom, dated April
1999
Pokewars!: Ralph Harrison
"Seriousness Unfolds"
Steffan Alun
Ralph Harrison opened his eyes. He saw a white ceiling directly above
him.
He was in a bed. There was a television in front of him and a newspaper
on a nearby table.
He switched on the television. It was a programme about a group of
happy Pikachu who went on adventures.
Sickened, Mr Harrison switched it off. He got out of the bed and walked
to the table. He read the article on the front page.
'THE INVISIBLE TERRORIST
'YESTERDAY afternoon, a helicopter was stolen from a building in
Goldenrod City. The helicopter belonged to Jack Compeyson (53), president
of ComComCom - the Complete Communications company - which is a small
business which develops phones and modems.
'The incident is clouded in mystery, however, as no-one was seen aboard
the helicopter. Witnesses claimed to have seen someone escape using a cable
attached to the helicopter. The cable found was not the type of cable used
by ComComCom, however - it was of a better quality than their usual stock.
Police are questioning various other phone companies and cable
manufacturers.
'There was only one casualty; Ralph Harrison (34), a manager for
ComComCom. Harrison is thought to have seen the helicopter being stolen via
CCTV and ran after it. Neither he nor the helicopter got far; it cashed in
a field about four hundred yards away. The helicopter would certainly have
killed Harrison had he not taken a Poliwrath along with him. The Poliwrath
somehow managed to get aboard the helicopter and put out a fire, saving
Harrison's life.'
Mr Harrison put the paper down. He didn't care much for the rest of the
article.
A door opened and a nurse walked through it.
"I'm glad to see you up, Mr Harrison," she said. "Are you sure you
don't want to rest before getting up?"
"I need to get back to work," said Mr Harrison.
"I don't think I can let you do that," said the nurse. "You were
involved in a police investigation. You're technically a suspect, and for
another."
Mr Harrison had not intended to knock the nurse unconscious. He didn't
even think his gun would still be in his pocket. He hoped the butt of the
gun hadn't caused the woman too much harm.
BOOM!
He wanted it to look like she'd died from a bullet only.
-----------------------------
In retrospect, Mr Harrison didn't know why he'd shot the nurse. He felt
very guilty about it now. Still, though, that was in the past; he needed to
concentrate on the future.
He needed a car. That was definite. He couldn't do anything without a
quick means of transportation. How would he find a car, though? ComComCom
wasn't that far away. He could walk there and get the keys.
That was the plan. However, Mr Harrison made a minor error, and instead
put a gun to a passer-by's head.
"Don't move," he commanded.
"Mr Harrison?"
"Mike!"
"What are you doing here? Why aren't you back at.why have you got a
gun?"
"It doesn't matter," said Mr Harrison. He put the gun back in his
pocket. He made a mental note that he needed some clothes to replace the
clothing he'd ruined when he jumped from the helicopter. "Give me the keys
to your car, Mike. I need it."
"Why?"
"Don't ask questions now! I need the car!" Mr Harrison couldn't
understand why he was so desperate for the keys. He tried to calm his voice
down, but failed.
Mike handed over the keys. Mr Harrison grabbed them and ran outside
without another word.
-----------------------------
Mr Harrison didn't much care for driving. There were too many
situations to assess and judgements to be made. Much like being the manager
of the Goldenrod branch of ComComCom. Mr Harrison hated his job, and hated
ComComCom for MAKING him hate his job.
Get up
If you wanna survive
Give us some life
Latino Simon by the Primeapez was playing on the radio. Mr Harrison
liked the song. It demonstrated creative imagination, something he didn't
have.
In your life
Everything falling out the sky on top of you
Mr Harrison turned to the right to avoid a roundabout. Mr Harrison
hated roundabouts. Mr Harrison realised that he didn't always have complete
control of his actions, but roundabouts were the worst. He had no control
over his actions if he went on one. If he didn't have someone with him in
the car to repeatedly say "go left" or similar, Mr Harrison would have no
idea where he'd leave the roundabout.
Mr Harrison had to drive for twice as long as other employees to get to the
ComComCom building each morning. There was only one way to get there
without passing any roundabouts. He wasn't sure why he did it. His current
job meant nothing to him.
It's the love of your life
She will lean on me
Mr Harrison had two options. He could return home, claim that he was
innocent and hope for the best, or he could continue to drive for as long as
he could. Which option would be best?
Give up
If you wanna survive
Pick us up back home
No. Wait. There was another option. He could return to ComComCom. He
could collect the necessary equipment, and continue his original plan. He
could get the wires in place first and leave the Radio Tower business until
last!
What's the point?
It's funny 'til you're left to kill yourself
In this town
By a lucky coincidence, Mr Harrison's mind and body both agreed to the
plan. He turned the steering wheel around quickly, narrowly missing an
oncoming lorry. Mr Harrison turned into a field to avoid a roundabout.
So what's the matter with me?
What's the matter with me?
What's the matter with me?
What's the matter with meeeee?
[TBC?]
Set-up is now complete, and the plot begins. From this point on, "TBC?"
will demonstrate that I have no immediate plans and any people currently
interacting with me can follow up to it.
