Becky wandered the beach on Cianwood, looking for shells and with a sharp
eye out for wild pokemon. Dbu had let himself out of his pokeball,
apparently eager for more training, and as Becky had nothing better to do
at the moment, she decided that she would give him the chance. The Shiny
Unown would have a long way to go before becoming a strong battler, so any
chance would train with him would be good.
As Dbu floated beside the teen aged black belt, waiting for a wild pokemon
to appear, he sent his mind back to his home. The Ruins were quiet, the
doorway still shut. He hadn't expected any different, as he was one of the
keys to opening it. All 26 of his brethren would be required when it was
time. But there did exist another way to access the power that the doorway
shut off.
Dbu and his fellow Unown were supposed to be guardians of that vast power.
A Psychic pool of almost unlimited energies. And unlimited potential. If
utilized by the wrong entity, there was enough power behind that door to
snuff out the sun and rend the planet. If those energies were tapped,
nothing would be beyond the power of the creature that controlled it. Time
itself could be made to stop for the entire universe.
It had last been opened over two thousand years ago. Alph had been a vast
city then, filled with technological wonders not seen in the world since.
The humans that built the city were happy and prosperous. Alph the city had
covered almost all of Johto. The people enjoyed all the benefits of
advanced society. Food was replicated by machines, so no person went
hungry. They had even begun to venture beyond the world, out into the void
of space in vast ships the size of Goldenrod city.
But then the greedy one came. He had successfully fulfilled the Quest and
was given access to the Power. Alph had come to ruin in a single moment.
His first wish was that the Great City be cleansed from the earth. As soon
as the last syllable had left his lips, the buildings all vanished.
Thousands perished as the vast skyscrapers winked out of existence, leaving
them sitting laying or standing in mid-air allowed only one look of
surprise before gravity took hold and dragged them down to the bare earth.
The Greedy one's second wish was that all the knowledge in and of the great
city would reside in him alone. In that instant, only he knew the
technological wonders that had existed. Scientist who had spent lifetimes
creating things like the teleportation pods that made transportation in the
great city easy and instantaneous, or the medical robots that could cure
any disease within a single day, these great minds were wiped clean of
their science. All over the world, people forgot the name of the great
city. In space, where the city sized ships explored, the knowledge of Alph
was wiped from both the people and the computers. The way home was forever
lost in the process. Only the Greedy one possessed the knowledge then.
For that was the source of his greed. Not wealth, not women, not even
immortality. Simply that he be the only one to possess the knowledge, the
wonders that man had created in the great city. Once he possessed that
knowledge, he made his final wish to protect it. His final wish was that
the entire world be returned to the state it was before Alph came to be.
When he uttered that wish, that final wish, the world underwent a
transformation.
Of course, Technology hadn't existed only in Alph, the rest of the world
shared in that bounty. But in an instant, it all simply ceased to exist.
Five hundred years of history vanished between the taking of one breath and
the next. Cities, minuscule in comparison to Alph but not insubstantial in
their own right ceased to be. Where they stood, forests and fields took
their place. Men that had been thinking of the safest way to split the atom
for power suddenly found themselves wondering what to plant for the new
season. They were completely unaware of the change the world had undergone.
That is not to say that the hands of time were turned back, however. The
Greedy Ones wish hadn't asked for that. In space, the City Ships were
unaffected by this wish, because the wish had been for the world alone.
The final fate of those were not known to the Unown. However, there was a
terrible toll, even if the humans of the world didn't know. In addition to
the cities of the world all vanishing, a goodly portion of the population
had ceased to exist as well. Before Alph, before cities and technology, the
world was much less densely populated, so the numbers of humans had to be
adjusted to fulfill the wish. At the same time, pokemon and animal
populations were doubled, and in some cases tripled.
With his wishes fulfilled, the Greedy One took his leave of the Ruins. The
power was once more shut away and the Unown once more assumed the
guardianship. The Unown were the only ones not effected by the changes
inflicted upon the world. They were devastated by the changes wrought. But
they could do nothing. They did, however, resolve to try and undo what had
been done. Over years the Unown met and discussed what had happened. The
idea began to form of controlling the next person that tried to complete
the Quest.
However, over the centuries, the Idea became perverted. The goal was still
to control the next Quester, but no longer was it to undo what had been
done. Instead, the focus shifted as individuals thought about how to use
that vast power. Of course Dbu and his brethren hadn't been alive for this.
Unown aren't immortal, they age and die just as all other creatures. It
took centuries, generations, but the Collective of normal Unown and the 26
Guardians decided it was at last time to act. Seizing the opportunity
provided when a group of humans had accidentally broken into the chamber of
the Unown, they had set the Quest in motion once more.
Dbu himself didn't think it right that those entrusted with the
Guardianship should seek to control the Power. He intended to let the
person who completed the Quest make the wishes they wanted too. But in
order to do that, he would have to become stronger. His Brethren were
banding together and becoming more powerful with every passing day. The
stronger of them influencing the weaker. He would have to become as strong
as he could if he were to oppose them. And until he did, he would have to
avoid becoming a part of a collective himself. Thus he had caused to be
created the Dark ball that would shield his presence from his brethren.
"Look Double You!" Becky interrupted his thoughts. "A Corsola! Time to get
some training in."
Dbu ooked to where the girl was pointing and saw a pink shelled pokemon
struggling up the beach. He prepared himself for battle. "Listen, Double
You." The girl said. "I can't keep calling out Hidden Power during battle.
Since that is the only attack you will ever know, I will just call out
either 'Attack' or 'Dodge' When I call out Dodge, try and avoid whatever
attack the other pokemon is sending at you. When I call out attack, use
your hidden power. Got it?"
The Shiny Unown bobbed up and down to indicate his understanding. He could
have just answered the affirmative into the girl's mind, but she didn't yet
know that aspect of his power. Dbu sped off towards the Corsola before it
could get away. The Corsola saw him coming and turned towards him. "Cor?
"
"Un own own unown un " Dbu responded
The Corsola's eyes narrowed and it looked more aggressive. Dbu prepared his
hidden power and was about to unleash it when Becky's voice cried out
"Dodge!" Almost to late, Dbu noticed the spikes on the Corsola's shell were
glowing. He began dodging the spikes that shot out from Corsola's shell,
managing to avoid all but one. In pain, but not yet out of the fight, Dbu
released his Hidden Power, controling the rapidly spinning balls so that
all six hit their target
The force spun the Corsola rapidly in place, and it came to a rest dizzy.
"Attack again!" Becky called out, taking advantage. Once more Dbu unleashed
his attack and scored on the Corsola, this time fainting it. "Good job!"
Becky called out and Dbu felt himself flush unexpectedly at the praise. He
decided that fate had dealt him a good hand when allowing the girl to
accidentally capture him.
