"Strange Bob should say that. Mimic pretty sure this hydroponics experiment. Only way there be ground up here." Bob looked around at the metal walls. "Yeah, I'd kind of guessed that. But *where*..." Bob blinked. "Wait, you don't mean...?" "Mimic do." #He does.# "WE'RE IN SPACE?!?" "Upper atmosphere, actually, judging by gravity. Probably decelerating through atmosphere now. Mimic hear rocket program in Hoenn near ready testing. Maybe Celebi put us in one?" #Oh, hey, I'd heard about that. Wasn't that program in trouble because their rockets kept blowing up?# Bob was trying not to panic, and succeeding so far. "Rockets blow up on launch. This landing. Should be totally safe, so long as rocket land safely. Of course, Hoenn need practice make sure rockets land safely." #How many rockets do you think they've gotten back so far?# "Mimic had guess? Maybe this first one." So far. #Wow! Hey, Bob! We're going to make history! Do you think they'll accept that we teleported here by accident, or do you think they'll insist we're aliens?# "Mimic think better no take chances. Possibility of latter, especially given Bob; possibility of indefinite quarantine. Even if escape, that make Bob, Raffy fugitives for life from type of people *no* give up." Mimic looked away. "Mimic...had too much experience with that, from Rockets. No inflict on Mimic friends. No inflict on Mimic enemies, unless really deserve it." So far. #Do you have any alternative suggestions? It's not like we can just walk out of here.# "Leave same way came in: teleport. Celebi timeport probably forget take into account Earth movement; that why appear so high up. But teleport no need worry about that: no going through time. Just need account for velocity. Maybe tricky." #What could possibly go wrong?# *Ding!* went Bob's danger sense. "Could wind up on ground, at present velocity. Supersonic straight down no much fun." *Ding! Ding!* #Oh, yeah. Well, we could do it over the ocean - no, wait, at that speed it wouldn't matter where we land; any surface would be hard.# *Ding! Ding! Ding-a-ling ding ding!* "And worse, Mimic never sense ground from this far up before. No sure if senses calibrated. Could wind up teleporting into solid rock." By now, Bob's danger sense was playing a battle theme. "Oh, well, nothing do but try. Here g-" ****** "And in other news, the Space Center's 47th rocket trial ended in another failure. I'm here with Mister...?" "Call me Astro. Everyone else does." "Mister Astro, one of the engineers on the project. I understand this was not a normal failure, Mister Astro?" "Just Astro. And yes, it was not. It was a perfect, beautiful launch and orbit. Everything seemed to be going well. We thought it would; that's why we put an actual science experiment on board - to see if plants will still grow in space. They will, of course - at least, there's no known reason why they would not, especially since the trajectory we gave the rocket put them at about 1 G for their entire flight. But some scientists thought the atmosphere would leak out once we punctured its top or something; they wanted proof. And proof they had: we had telemetry from the rocket right up until the very end." "So what went wrong, Just Astro?" "We're still not sure. I wish we'd thought to install a video camera on board. As it was, the energy signatures are consistent with three or four good-sized pokemon teleporting aboard, then teleporting off again. But we don't know of any pokemon naturally ocurring at that altitude, neither did we know of any within several miles of it at the time. The anomaly was enough to trigger the rocket's self-destruct. I think we've learned to disable the self-destruct when it's no longer useful, or maybe omit it altogether." "Okay. That's all we have time for, so thanks, Just Astro. This is-" *click* Bob sat back in his chair as the television powered off, and let out a relaxed sigh, sipping another berry juice. This cave had been some kid's secret base, but the note they found was very clear that whoever found the place could have it; apparently, its former owner had had to move away without even time to pack up his stuff. Something - presumably, a nearby wave or solar generator - provided enough power that the consumables in the refrigerator had not yet spoiled. Exactly where they were was still a mystery, but it was apparently a small enough island that Raffy believed he could walk around it in an hour. He had gone to do just that, looking for signs of civilization, while Mimic transformed into various position-finding gadgets, on top of the cave's roof for better reception. Which left Bob with the very important task of relaxing. TBC?
