"No thanks to you." "So I'm afraid of water, so sue me," Kitsu said. "You think that gypsy is still in the burned tower?" Keaton asked. "In all likelyhood, the gypsy would've moved on by now," Kitsu replied. "But it couldn't hurt to take a look." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- "It seems, Sir Jordan, that despite your efforts the fair maiden Kitsu continues her quest to walk blindly into my clutches." "You'll never truly have Kitsu, Rossiter. Thanks to what you put in her head, all you'll ever have is a mere puppet." "Details, details." The shadow-shrouded figure turned, his cloak wrapping around himself, towards the half-man, half-Houndoom bound to his wall. "With Kitsu as my queen," the figure said, guesturing with a clawed hand, "My victory will be complete. Without her, the opposition will surely fall and I will conquer world after world after world." "This game of yours will end with your defeat!" the half-Houndoom snapped. Rossiter swung his hand furiously. Even from across the room, the slap made an impact across Jordan's face. "You simple fool!" Rossiter's voice raised. "You deny my victory even when it is so close it can spit in your face!? I have already won!" "The game's not over yet, fiend!" Jordan shot back. "I still have a card or two left to play." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- As Kitsu and Keaton passed an alleyway, a glint of silver caught Kitsu's eye. She paused to look down the alley. Hidden in the shadows, a man in a trenchcoat and hat flipped a coin while watching them intently. "Kitsu and Keaton, I presume?" the man inquired. "What's it worth to ya?" Keaton demanded. "I have some information for you," the man said. "About your gypsy." "We were just going to the burned tower to check it out," Kitsu said. "Don't bother," the man said. "Meet me at Anna Miller's on Third and Lexington at nine o'clock. I'll tell you were you need to go." "Who are you?" Kitsu asked. "That's not important," the man replied, walking off. "I cannot tell you any more here. Meet me there at nine, and don't be late." "Think we should go?" Kitsu asked. "Anna Miller's is the place with those cute waitresses, right?" Keaton asked. "I think so," Kitsu replied. "Then I think this is the break we've been looking for," Keaton said. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- "Clever," Rossiter admitted. "But ultimately futile. They will come to me in due time." "We'll see," Jordan said. "We'll see." "Until then, the veil shall remain in place," Rossiter continued. "So don't count on anyone random coming to your rescue here atop the burned tower." "I won't be the one needing rescuing," Jordan threatened under his breath.
