"I'm here!" Robert exclaims upon entering a small town towards the north
of the Johto continent, "I'm truly, really, finally here! I've arrived
at Mahogany Town!" He falls to the ground and kisses it a few times
before being disgusted and spitting out the dirt that entered his mouth.
Glancing around, Robert notices the town's streets are abandoned at 5 PM
on this Sunday afternoon, and he decides to call up someone who can
congratulate him on his accomplishment. He sits up on the ground, faces
a nearby river, presses some buttons on the Pokegear he's wearing on his
left wrist, and waits as a ringing sound emits from the device.
After shortly more than a minute of ringing, the face of Mithril-rama,
Robert's girlfriend, appears on the Pokegear's small screen, "Hi,
Robert, is this urgent? I'm kinda in the middle of a Gym match here."
"Oh, it's very urgent!" Robert nods, "It's most important news!"
"What is it?" Robert's concerned girlfriend asks, "Is one of your
Pokemon gravely ill?" She looks away a moment to say, "Clefable,
Metronome," then turns her attention back to her boyfriend.
"No... why do so many people assume important news is bad news?" Robert
comments, "One of my Pokemon could be having a baby, you know."
"Did Seadra lay an Egg?" Rilli asks before shouting, "Clefable, Sing
that Dragonair to sleep before she's able to use Dragon Rage!"
"Of course not!" Robert shakes his head, "You know that Seadra doesn't
have a boyfriend. That was just an example, Rilli. But my news is just
as good as, if not better than, that sample good news."
"Clefable, keep on using Double-slap until the Dragonair faints or wakes
up!" Mithril-rama sighs, "Tell me what the news is, already, Robert!"
Robert makes a V with his right hand fingers and raises them high as he
smiles into his Pokegear and proclaims, "I've reached Mahogany Town!"
"Well, it's about time." Mithril-rama comments before asking, "What
happened to you after you got there that's so important?"
"Huh? After I got here, I just kissed the ground and called you." Robert
frowns, "That was the important news - that I've arrived in Mahogany
Town. And what do you mean 'it's about time'? I've only taken a little
over a month to get here. It took Ash Ketchum at least twice that long
and he had help from his traveling partners. I've been traveling solo
since I went to the Ecruteak Pokemon Center and found out Travis and
Becky were called away for some family emergency... I'd say one month is
record time for a person traveling solo from Ecruteak to Mahogany Town!"
Mithril-rama calls out, "Clefable, try Metronome again!"
"Is that all you have to say? 'Clefable, try Metronome again'?" Robert
asks, disappointed with Rilli's lack of support.
"I'm sorry. Good job, Robert. I have to go now, my opponent's Pokemon
just woke up. I'll call you tonight!" That said, Robert's Pokegear
automatically switches over to Clock Mode.
Robert sighs, stands up, and follows the river east towards the Mahogany
Town Pokemon Center. On his way to the Pokemon Center, he notices a
construction site abandoned for the weekend with a sign outside of it
that reads "Morty's Rockets - Reopening Soon!", a large building
surrounded by gas that looks like it's been abandoned for over a year,
and various identical houses, but he doesn't see any people.
"This place looks like a Ghost Town," Robert remarks to himself, "Morty
should consider trading places with whoever this town's Gym Leader is."
"Pryce."
Robert stops in his tracks and turns around to see a short old woman who
sneaked up behind him on his way to the Pokemon Center, the first person
he's seen since arriving at Mahogany Town, "Morty doesn't trade places
with the Mahogany Town Gym Leader because of the price of relocation?"
"Ha! No, the Mahogany Town Gym Leader's name is Pryce. I should know,
he's my best friend." The old woman smiles and bows at Robert before
stating, "My name's Sheila, pleased to meet you."
Robert follows suit and bows before introducing himself to Sheila, "I'm
Robert, the Diversity Gym Leader, and I'd like to challenge Pryce to a
Gym match - is he at his Gym now?"
"Nope, today is Pryce's day of rest." Sheila answers, "He's out in the
forest north of the city meditating."
"Is EVERY citizen of this city except you in the forest meditating?"
Robert gestures towards the streets, "This town looks abandoned!"
"Actually, Pryce is one of the few citizens who meditate in the forest."
Sheila explains, "A great majority of the people who live in Mahogany
Town go fishing at the Lake of Rage beyond the northern forest on the
weekends. They hold contests to see who can catch the biggest Magikarp."
"A fishing contest? That sounds cool! I'd like to participate." Robert
boasts, "One time I fished up twelve Magikarp, six Goldeen, seven
Krabby, and six Psyduck in about an hour near Bill's Lighthouse in
Kanto. Can you please show me how to get to the Lake of Rage?"
"Actually, the contest is held on Saturdays," says Sheila, "On Sunday,
the people just lounge around by the Lake or go swimming in it. My
advice is to rest up at the Pokemon Center today, challenge Pryce at
some point this week, then visit the Lake of Rage next weekend."
Robert smiles, "That's a great plan! Thanks for the information, Sheila!
Would you like to join me for dinner at the Pokemon Center tonight?"
"Sure thing, Robert. I'd love to join you for dinner."
"Okay, let's go!" Robert continues to march eastward.
"Just one thing, though."
"What's that, Sheila?"
"The Pokemon Center is to the south of here, across the bridge you
passed a few minutes ago."
Robert sweatdrops, turns around, and says, "Maybe you should lead."
