Marcia, a nurse who has blue hair with purple roots, is tending to a
bruised Elekid in the back room of the Violet City Pokemon Center when
Nurse Joy enters the room and says, "There's a tired Pokemon waiting for
you in the lobby, Nurse Marcia - you should go tend to his needs."
"Why can't you do it? Can't you see I'm busy?" Marcia sprays a medical
fluid on the Elekid's bruise and rubs his forehead when he releases
sparks, "I know it stings, but it'll help your wound heal faster."
Nurse Joy smiles, "He insists to be healed by you."
"Since when can you talk with Pokemon?" Nurse Marcia asks, turning
around to face her boss. When she sees the smile on Nurse Joy's face,
she lowers her eyelids, "Oh. He's back? It's only been three months
since we got back from Kanto. Did he find Aerie already?"
"You should ask him, not me."
"Fine." Nurse Marcia places the medicine she's holding into a nearby
drawer and walks into the Pokemon Center's lobby, where she encounters a
familiar fellow dressed in a leather hat and jacket sitting on the
Center's front desk with his legs crossed. The man looks weary - his
squinted eyes have bags under them and his arms are limp. Marcia bluntly
states, "Hey, Dee, get off the desk. Did you find Aerie?"
"No 'welcome home'? I'm hurt." Dee sluggishly climbs off the front desk,
over to the side where Marcia is standing, "I'm afraid I haven't found
her, and before you ask, I've searched just about everywhere in the
known world."
Marcia crosses her arms and a look of disbelief appears on her face,
"You searched everywhere in the world in three months?"
Dee nods, "I know it's kind of slow for me, but I wasn't training as
much as I used to when I settled down here with you."
"Did you at least find some shiny Unown in your travels?"
"Yeah."
"How many?"
"Oh, quite a few. There were five in the Goldenrod City area alone and I
think there were a few in Cianwood City. When I tried to fly into the
city, I found that the entire place was frozen in time and space. I
tried to Teleport into it, but I wasn't able to."
"I wonder why Mr. Pokemon didn't call me to tell me about all the Unown
you caught for him..."
"What do you mean?"
"You did catch all the shiny Unown you found and send them to his
storage machine using your Pokedex, right?"
"No, they all belonged to people. A biker, a magician, a tortured-" Dee
begins, but Marcia interrupts him by asking, "Since when do property
rights stop YOU?"
Dee looks both confused and frustrated as he answers, "They didn't
before, but during the time we spent together last year, you told me
that stealing is 'wrong'. I didn't want you to be disappointed in me, so
I didn't take the shiny Unown from their Trainers."
Marcia falls back into the chair behind the front desk and sighs, "What
a time for you to develop a conscience, Doppler. Oh, sure, you don't
mind destroying entire cities, but the moment the fate of the world's in
your hands, you're powerless to help because 'stealing is wrong'."
Dee isn't sure how to respond. After a moment of silence, he asks,
"So... do you want me to go back to Goldenrod and steal the shiny Unown
if they're still there? I'll be glad to, if that's what will make you
happy."
"Of course I don't want you to do that!"
"..." Dee pauses for a moment before arguing, "But you said..."
"Nevermind what I said!" Marcia rubs her forehead for a few seconds then
suggests, "You should go back to Goldenrod City and try to peacefully
convince the owners of the shiny Unown to give them to you. That also
goes for any shiny Unown you saw elsewhere in the world."
"Peacefully, hm?" Dee strokes his chin, "Can you come with me, then?
You've been working here for three months straight, ever since we got
back from our trip to get my Pokedex. You deserve a vacation. We can
even look for Aerie together after we've caught the shiny Unown."
"I told you when you wanted me to go with you three months ago and I'll
tell you again..." Marcia stands up and puts her hands on her hips, "I
care about Aerie deeply, but it's not my fault she's in trouble. Being
her mother, I want her to be safe and sound, but since you're the one
who was ridiculously negligent, you're the one who should drop
everything you're doing to find her. I didn't leave her alone with the
shiny Unown. In fact, I didn't even actively will her birth. I love my
career and I will not leave it for you or for a daughter I didn't ask
for."
"If that's the case, you can still go to Goldenrod with me then come
back to work." Dee points out, "You wouldn't be looking for Aerie or
leaving your career - you'd just be taking a brief vacation to help a
friend."
"No, Doppler, I'm staying here." Marcia declares, "I've got sick Pokemon
to care for. The last time I left the Center, Nurse Joy almost lost a
Mareep. If you really loved me, you'd understand why staying here and
caring for hurt Pokemon is so important to me. Protecting the world from
shiny Unown is also important to me, but I can't do both at once and I
think you're more qualified than I am to do the latter task. You say
you've changed, but if the only reason you'd be willing to collect shiny
Unown is to spend time with me or win my affection, then you really
haven't changed. You'd still be a lovesick Ditto who will do anything,
whether good or bad, to get what he wants. Is that who you are?"
