That ash road was full of them." Derek said. > > One could almost swear that the referee twitched at the word "medieval" "Chan, use Fire Punch!" Derek commanded. "Fly, StarScream, Fly!" Chan charged at the metal bird with a flaming fist, but StarScream nimbly fled into a higher altitude. Smasher knew he couldn't afford to have StarScream use that move again as it would give Chan an oppurtunity to Recover. He figured his best chance was to keep the Fighting Psychic on his toes. StarScream soon soared back to Earth and slammed into Chan. The Medicham took the oppurtunity to give the Skarmory a flaming right hook across the beak. StarScream was thrown for a loop, but was able to regain control. "StarScream! Stay on him! Keep him busy with Swift fly-bies!" "Give 'em the ol' one-two, Chan!" StarScream flew at his opponent, spewing rapid-fire speed stars from his beak. The attack hit, but it was too weak to do serious damage. Meanwhile, Chan set one fist ablaze while the other turned ice cold. He swatted his opponent as he passed, but failed to connect. StarScream made another pass, this time missing his nimble opponent but was able to dodge Chan's attacks again. 'If his Medicham takes it to him with both Fire and Ice Punch, StarScream'll take far more damage from the combo than if he used just either attack on their own,' Smasher thought, remembering the match his Steelix had against Yolei's Quagsire and Quilava in Eckruteak. "Keep it up, StarScream, buddy!" "You're Skarmory won't be able to dodge for long!" Derek called out across the field. "Chan will hit him eventually!" StarScream continued his hit-and-run assaults, but Chan managed to barely evade each time. StarScream was wild and relentless in his assault while Chan remained in control without wasting too much energy on redundant moves. Finally, StarScream's luck ran out and Chan landed a Fire Punch. This was followed with an Ice Punch and another Fire Punch in a rapid succession of moves. "StarScream, Endure!" "Lay into him, Chan!" StarScream crossed his wings in front of him and Chan's fists clanged harmlessly against them. His defensive tactic wouldn't save him for long, and Smasher knew it. He quickly ran the match thus far in his head, looking for a particular weakness. He remembered that the Medicham dodged his Skarmory's attacks by moving just far enough to avoid touching his metal body. He even cleared StarScream's wings, which he kept in close to speed up his dives. Smasher was still at a loss, and StarScream continued his futile Endurance technique. His chances for victory were fading fast. He wracked his brain for a better strategy and a longshot soon clawed its way into conception. It was a combo Smasher had tried with Skarmory before, but it never quite worked right. Smasher doubted it would work, but he had few other options. "StarScream!" Smasher called out. "Red Baron Special!" "Skarrrrrrr!" StarScream cried. He spread his wings, knocking Chan away from him, and took flight. "Smasher's Skarmory is going in its previous attack pattern!" the announcer informed. "This again?" noted Derek. "You can't possibly think it'll work! Chan will just dodge it again!" "Just watch the birdy," Smasher said confidently. StarScream swooped in, spitting out yet another Swift attack. Chan avoided the attack with ease, leaning to his left and right smack into a glowing Steel Wing as StarScream swerved right. The unexpected strike met with the Medicham's head and sent him across the field. Chan hit a wall and went limp. "Function ceased!" Mr. Referee declared. "The winner is Smasher and Skarmory!" "Yeah!" Smasher cheered over the roaring crowd as his Skarmory flew back to him. "Slip me some steel, man!" StarScream slapped his wing against Smasher's palm in a sort of high-five as the metal bird began his victory lap. Smasher proceeded to cross the field to Derek's side and extended his hand. "That was an awesome battle, dude," Smasher said. "I almost thought I was a goner for a moment there. That is one killer Medicham you have. I don't think I could've defeated that with a Tyrannitar!" "Thanks," Derek said, taking Smasher's hand. "Your Skarmory was pretty tough, too. I've never known a Steel type to stand up very long against that combination. And your Arcanine is nothing to sneeze at, either." "You should see my Pikachu and my Marowak," Smasher chuckled. He looked at the hand he was holding for a moment, then looked back into Derek's face. "You... have questions about your past... I can't tell you anything, but I hope you find the answers you're looking for." Smasher let go of Derek's hand and walked off. "How did you...?" Derek asked. "Just a little trick I picked up from my grandfather," Smasher replied on his way out with StarScream carrying Shuriken. "Good luck on your journey, Derek! C-ya!"
