It didn't take her long to find the path towards Violet City, and to find the Ruins of Alph. On the map, anyway. "Excuse me," she asked a young trainer, "Which way to the Ruins of Alph?" "Just south, lady," the trainer said. "Don't know why you'd want to go there. I hear strange things happen there." "I hope so." She let the trainer go and headed south. "Okay, Kurt. I'm at the entrance." "Good. I'll tell... Tr... see...." "Kurt?" Carol lost contact with the Abra... the earpiece was apparently malfunctioning. But then, that meant she didn't have to follow orders. With a grin on her face, she ran away from the Ruins of Alph. "C... th.... Carol?" "Oh, you're back... what happened?" "I don't know. Something must've interfered." Pokewars!: Carol Ross "The Unown Speak! OH NO!" Jose L. Solano Carol finally realized the problem: every time she came near the entrance, the signal faded. Hiding behind a bush close to the entrance, careful to avoid being seen by a group of people a few feet away from her, Carol pried at the earpiece again, but it didn't move. "Hey, hey, what are you trying to do?" Trent said. "Huh? Trent! I..." "That thing is staying on, whether it works or not." "Okay, I get it, just-" "Funny, huh?" Oh. It was a recording. She should have known. She carefully moved behind the people at the entrance and quickly snuck in. The first room wasn't as large as she imagined, but she noticed that there was a way deeper into the cave. Someone had already solved a puzzle in this first room, and probably just before Carol arrived, or it probably would have reset. At least, that was what she figured. Carol made it to the main chamber, careful not to make too much noise. If someone was there already, she thought it would be best not to let them know she was there too. Oddly enough, strange music was playing in her earpiece, which seemed creepy, but she ignored it. The walls were lined with Unown... or rather, markings that looked like Unown. "Kurt? K-" Carol quickly remembered the radio interference. "Looks like I'm on my own. Now, how do I get them to-AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" An Unown had been floating right behind her, but when she screamed it flew down the chamber. She ran after it, and more Unown seemed to be following her. She stopped, and they began to fly around her in a circle. She couldn't tell how many there were, but she threw out a Pokéball in fear, not caring which one it was. It didn't open, and the Unown stopped. "WHY HAVE YOU COME?" they said. Only, they didn't. They were speaking directly into Carol's mind. "I need to know about the Shiny Unown," she said shyly. "THE TWENTY SIX WERE RELEASED. THEY MUST BE BROUGHT BACK." "And... what do I get if I bring them back." "IF THEY ARE RETURNED, YOU WILL BE GRANTED THREE WISHES." "What kinds of wishes?" "ANY WISHES." "Can I wish for money." "POSSIBLY." "Can I wish for fame?" "POSSIBLY." "Can I-" "ALL WISHES ARE POSSIBLE." "What about power?" "HE DESIRES POWER." "What?" "HE DESIRES POWER. ALL DESIRE POWER. TELL HIM THAT IF HE RETURNS THEM, HE WILL HAVE POWER." "How about I take that instead?" "IT DOES NOT MATTER. IF YOU RETURN THEM, YOU WILL HAVE POWER, IF THAT IS YOUR WISH." "Do you know where they are?" "IF THEIR LOCATION WAS KNOWN, THEY WOULD BE BROUGHT BACK." "I know some people who are already collecting them. What if I only bring one back? Do I still get a wish?" "THAT WILL BE DETERMINED WHEN IT IS RETURNED." "No answers, huh? I get it. There aren't any wishes, are there?" "DO NOT ASSUME." The voice appeared angrier, and Carol's head began to hurt. "IF THEY ARE RETURNED, THEN A REWARD MAY BE GIVEN. THERE WILL BE NO REWARD IF NONE ARE RETURNED. REMEMBER THIS. IF YOU WISH TO FIND THEM, DO NOT WASTE TIME. IF NOTHING IS DONE, THEN NOTHING IS EARNED." "I guess you have a point," Carol said. The Unown flew off in various directions, and to Carol this meant that they had nothing else to say. She had the information she wanted anyway. She carefully left the Ruins of Alph and contacted Kurt. "Alright, I've got the information." "Yes? Good, then you can come back." "What? So soon?" "Trent will be expecting a report, Carol." "So what difference does it make? I'm gonna enjoy some free time around here and worry about that later. He's too stupid to figure out that I'm not doing my job." "Trent is stupid," Kurt said in agreement, "But he's also dangerous. The only reason he never killed you was because he sought information. You don't know him like we do. When he does figure out that you've been loitering over there, he'll hunt you, Carol. I don't know what he'll do to you, but it won't be fun." "Aw, he wouldn't hurt me. I'm too cute." "You can't use that to your advantage with him. He sees you as expendable as it is. We've... apparently moved. Cianwood, I believe." "Cianwood? That's a bit farther than the Whirl Islands from here... but okay, fine." Carol sighed and made her way back through the forest. Jose L.
