In Olivine City, a couple of elderly ladies had gathered outside to admire
the ship that had just boarded.
"Innit nice, Esther?" asked one.
"Nice?!" spluttered the lady named Esther. "That, Gina, is a terrible
vessel. Not like the ones we had back in them days, with all sails and
ropes."
"There's ropes on that one!"
"Ah, but it's all decoration," replied Esther, wisely. "Trying to make it
look more shippy. It's all mind games, this ship business."
"Blimey." Gina didn't realise there were so many connotations attached to
rope.
Suddenly, a boy emerged from the forest behind them.
"Argh!" shouted the boy, realising that his hand was experiencing a
temporarily symbiotic life with a Spinarak's jaw. He shook it off
violently.
"Hello, little child!" smiled Gina.
"That's not a child," said Esther coldly, not taking her eyes off the ship.
"That's one of THEM. Teenagings. Kill you so much as look at you."
"I'm sorry, madam," said the lad. "Do you know where I'm meant to go to
catch the ship?"
"Ooh, you're going on the SHIP, are you?" simpered Gina. "Ooh, if I was a
few years younger, my, I'd be up there right now."
"And...where do I go to catch the ship?" aksed the boy.
"What's your name, boy?" snapped Esther.
"Karl, ma'am."
"Do you have your parents' permission to be on that ship?"
"Well, yes, I have my father's permission." Karl tried to subtle fish out a
Pokéball from his bag.
"And is your father coming with you?"
"No, ma'am." Karl found the Pokéball. He scooped it out, and quietly
released a once S-shaped, but now squiggle-shaped, Unown.
"Then it's far too dangerous for you to go on that ship."
At this point, Karl walked into the open and brushed the Spinarak-webs from
his face. He gasped as he saw the magnificent ship in front of him. He
grinned as he read the name on the side.
"Ess!" he called. "Look at that!"
Ess was busying itself with trying to look less pathetic.
"Ess! ESS! TIDAL!!" cried Karl, pointing.
He ran towards the ship, followed by a lazy Psyduck and a vigilant
Farfetch'd. Ess floated along, wishing something would be done about its
shape first.
"Come on, guys! We're GOING TO HOENN!"

The first few apparitions at the door were not what Marvin had had in mind,
unfortunately. It was a white-haired boy with disturbing eyes, a Psyduck
who was practicing his diction, a Farfetch'd who was encouraging the
Psycduck's diction by way of leek-slapping, and an Unown that seemed to be
from foreign parts.
"Good day," greeted Karl, his normal nerves forgotten due to the sight of
the Marvin in his swimming trunks. "Are you headed for Hoenn as well?"
