Mithril-rama stared at him, expressionless. "You're joking."
Robert winced and turned away, not able to look the girl in the eyes.
"N--No, Rilli, I really..."
"You're joking."
"Rilli, I wouldn't lie to you about..."
"That's not funny, Robert."
"But I..." Robert looked up at Mithril-rama, and was shocked at the look
in her eyes. Or rather, there was no look whatsoever. Her eyes, always
smiling and bright, are now blank and unfocused, gazing at nothing as if
in a trance. "You're joking," barely moving lips repeated with an
icy-cold tone, voice cracking to almost a whisper.
Robert swallowed hard and tried to think of something to say. Of the
thousand scenarios played out in his head, he hadn't imagined this
reaction from her. He wasn't sure if she would even hear him if he tried
to protest or explain. It's as if she had already fled as soon as the
words fell from his mouth, leaving behind an unfeeling body. She spoke up
again before he could.
"Show me the letter."
"But... but it's late, Rilli, the computers might not be open..."
"Show me it," she cut him off quickly, her cold hand landing on his.
"Show me, or I'll never believe you." Wide unseeing eyes burned straight
through his. "Please..."
Robert carefully pushed his numb legs out of bed, then helped Rilli get
up. Her shaky legs folded under her, not willing to support the weight,
but Robert caught her and wrapped an arm around her waist for support.
She stood up straight and stiffly pulled away, taking halting steps
towards the door. Robert quickly followed her out to the main lobby of
the Pokémon Center, where a short row of computers lined the wall. Robert
turned on one of the machines and logged into his account reluctantly,
feeling much like the executioner marching a prisoner off to the gallows.
Rilli sat down and began scanning over the e-mail, her hand tightly
clutching the mouse. Robert turned away from the screen, not wanting to
re-read the dreaded message. The words have already replayed themselves
in his head almost to the point of driving him insane.
An unbearably long silence later, Mithril-rama stood up and stepped aside
so Robert could turn off the computer. She walked back to her room with
Robert beside her, never saying a word. The full moon cast its blue-hued
light through the window, lighting up the room with a solemn aura.
Silently, Rilli crawled into bed and clutched the blankets to her chest,
turning her back towards him.
Robert stood by her bed for a moment, not sure what to do. "Rilli?
Are... Are you okay?" Immediately he kicked himself for asking such a
stupid question. She just found out her best friend's dead, of course
she's not okay! Slowly, he sat down on the bed and gingerly touched her
hair to comfort her, but changed his mind and pulled his hand away.
"Yeah, I'm fine," her soft voice finally answered calmly, though somewhat
high-pitched and strained. "It's all right, really. You can go to bed."
"Are you sure?" Robert asked, worried and wondering why she doesn't seem
so upset. "I... I can stay here, if you want..." He leaned down and
slowly draped an arm over her, and pulled her into a loose hug when she
didn't protest. He was a bit surprised when she rolled over quietly and
buried her face in his shirt. Not knowing what else he could do, Robert
simply lay down and held her close to him, trying to blink back his own
tears.
"I told her to be careful..." Robert was startled when Rilli's muffled
teary voice spoke up, breaking the silence. "I should have, have warned
her that thing, was dangerous..." Robert tightened his arms around the
girl, her hiccuping sobs wetting his shirt. "I should have gone with her,
but I just, abandoned... It was my fault..." With those words, she burst
into a full flood of tears.
Robert closed his eyes, each sob from Rilli adding another twist to his
heart. "It wasn't your fault, Rilli," he whispered hoarsely, "I was the
one who asked you to... to come with me... None of us could have..." His
voice broke, and gave in to the streaks of tears already running down his
cheek. "Maybe... maybe it really is a joke, and... I'm sorry, Rilli..."
The girl shook her head and clasped onto him tighter. "Just don't go,
Robert, don't you leave me too... Please, promise me..."
Victreebel frowned (or at least as much as it could frown) from its seat
on the windowsill. It hated to see its friends so upset and disturbed.
Silently, it sent out a light cloud of Sleep Powder over the bed. And
finally, clutching desperately to each other, Robert and Rilli fell into a
deep dreamless sleep.
