Subject: [PW!] Sirius vs. Lorelei: Third time's a charm?
Date: Friday, April 30, 1999 9:56 PM
Sirius hesitantly walked up to the door. He had fought Lorelei two times
already, badly losing each. He wanted to quit, but knew he couldn't.
"Back for more?" Lorelei was feeding her Dewgong some fish when Sirius burst
through the door. "Most challengers give up after this many tries."
"I'm going to beat you eventually, Lorelei. I won't give up," he answered
confidently.
"Your tenacity won't help you. It's a matter of strategy, Sirius. If you're
ever going to beat me, you'll need different types of Pokémon." She threw a
baby Goldeen at her Dewgong, who wolfed it down in seconds.
"Do you accept my challenge or not?" asked Sirius. Lorelei sighed and
gingerly nodded her head.
"You should stop wasting my time, but I must take every challenge. You can
use as many Pokémon as you want, and when you switch to a different Pokémon the
Pokémon you withdrew can no longer be used. Ready?" Sirius nodded. "I
choose... Dewgong, go!"
"Dew dew gong!" The energized Dewgong slapped its tail into the water, making
a big splash. The freezing cold water hit Sirius in the face and soaked his
clothes. He coughed and tried to look serious.
"Marowak, you can do it!" Sirius threw the wet Pokéball through the air,
releasing Marowak.
"Dewgong, freeze it with Aurora Beam and finish it with Take Down!"
"Dew!"
"Marowak!"
"Marowak, dodge and counter with Bonemerang!"
The colorful beam crashed onto the tiles on the floor. Marowak had made it
out on time, but was nowhere to be seen. Dewgong searched the room, finding
nothing. Even Sirius scratched his head.
"Marowak wak Marowak!" Marowak landed on the other side of the room, behind
Lorelei. Startled, she turned around and shooed him away.
"Dewgong! Behind you!" she frantically warned Dewgong.
"Dew?" Dewgong turned around to get smashed in the face by the bone.
Hysterical from fright, Dewgong slipped down on its back and rolled into the
pool to recover. Dewgong sunk deep into the water.
"Quick, Marowak! Bone Club it before it can completely heal!"
"Dewgong, use Aurora Beam!"
Dewgong was still underwater when it heard Lorelei's command. Still scared,
it desperately shot out the icy beam. The water instantly froze, trapping
Dewgong inside.
"Dewgong!" gasped Lorelei. "Return!" Dewgong and the frozen ice were
retrieved into the Pokéball. The Pokéball turned a cold blue. Lorelei grabbed
another Pokéball from her pocket and threw it into the pool on the right side.
"Cloyster, I choose you!"
"Cloyster!" hissed Cloyster from inside its shell. It sunk down to the bottom
of the pool. The pool on the left side had already been refilled.
"Marowak, use Bonemerang!" shouted Sirius.
"Spike Cannon, now!"
Cloyster leaped from the water through the arena, spinning wildly. Marowak
sidestepped. Cloyster landed in the other pool. Cloyster tried again, barely
missing Marowak. Marowak waited for Cloyster's third try before hurling his
bone at it. The bone clanged off Cloyster's hard shell. Marowak caught it and
looked to Sirius for help just as Cloyster tried a fourth time. Sirius was out
of ideas.
"Marowak, return!" yelled Sirius, just as Cloyster hurdled through the air.
"You can no longer use your Marowak," reminded Lorelei.
"I know, I know. Reis, I choose you!" The Dragonair emerged from her
Pokéball.
"Dra gondra gonair?"
"Reis, use Thunder before it can attack!"
"Cloyster, stop." The Cloyster stopped dead in its tracks. "You can beat her
with one Aurora Beam."
"Cloyster!" Cloyster grinned as its shell opened. It began to gather energy.
"Dra... Dragonair!" Dragonair charged and released powerful bolts of
lightning, immediately charring Cloyster.
"Cloy..." it rasped, coughing out a puff of smoke.
"Cloyster, return! You've done well so far, Sirius. But you're still no
match for my Lapras. You will fail, just like your brother. Go, Slowbro!" A
long, silent pause followed.
"Slooow..." moaned Slowbro finally. There was another pause. "Broooo..."
"Slowbro, Water Gun!"
"Reis, charge up Hyper Beam and attack!"
Slowbro vacantly stared at Sirius, then slowly shifted its eyes to Reis,
charging her Hyper Beam. "Slooooow..." it repeated. Lorelei had had enough.
"UGH! I DON'T KNOW WHY I BOTHER WASTING MY TIME WITH YOU! YOU'RE NOT EVEN AN
ICE POKéMON! ARRRGH!" Lorelei gave Slowbro a swift kick in the back. Slowbro
hesitated, then pouted.
"Sloooow." Tears were in its eyes. Lorelei was immediately racked with
guilt.
"Oh, I'm sorry Slowbro," she apologized. "It's not your fault you're slow.
Now, use Water Gun."
Slowbro turned back to Reis. It stared at her for a while.
"Now, use Water Gun Slowbro."
Still nothing.
"SLOWBRO, USE WATER GUN!"
Slowbro's brain had finally received the message. It opened its mouth wide
and shot out the blast of water. But by that time, Reis had begun to fire her
Hyper Beam. The beam incinerated most of the water, and the rest splashed down
on the floor harmlessly. Reis continued her Hyper Beam, which was extended
because of her long charging period. Slowbro was hit and KO'd.
"Slowbro, return!" Slowbro was returned to its Pokéball before it could feel
the pain. "Jynx, don't fail me!" Sirius knew Reis couldn't handle a pure Ice
Pokémon. Well, Jynx was the purest of Lorelei's Pokémon at least. Charizard
would come in handy now, but its flying type would be the problem. There was
nothing else he could do.
"Charizard, go!"
"CHAAAAAAAR!"
"Jyyyyyyynx!" sang Jynx in a shrill, off-key voice.
"Charizard, Fire Spin!"
"Jynx, Ice Punch!"
At a surprising speed, Jynx lunged towards Charizard, fist forward. Charizard
took off into the air, but its foot was hit. Struggling through the pain,
Charizard fired the blast down to Jynx, surrounding her as it took the form of
a twister. Jynx fainted from the heat.
"Return, Jynx! Now, for my final Pokémon... Go, Lapras!" Lorelei threw the
Pokéball into the pool. The rare creature gracefully swam in circles. Sirius
checked back on his Charizard. It was lying on the floor, almost fainted.
"Charizard, return! Go, Seadra!" Aerodactyl and Gyarados probably weren't
strong enough for a Lapras. But Seadra, though considerably weaker, was the
only Pokémon without a disadvantage against Lapras. Seadra was at a lower
experience level than her, but was faster and could pull off more attacks.
"Lapras, Body Slam!"
"Seadra, keep moving! Counter with a water blast whenever you can!"
"Sea!"
Seadra dove into the other pool. Lapras emerged from the water and started to
the other side. Seadra squeaked and squirted ink into her eyes and descended
back down into the water while Lapras struggled with the ink using her short
fins.
"Lapras, shroud yourself in Mist!"
Lapras finally managed to wipe the ink off from her eyes. She raised her fins
and suddenly the whole arena became shrouded in mist. Seadra jumped out of the
pool to see what was going on.
Lapras sneaked up on the unsuspecting seahorse. She raised her fin and
slapped her. Seadra, more in shock than in pain, countered by letting out
smokescreen. Soon, nothing could be seen.
The battle raged on for hours, with Sirius and Lorelei each trying to find out
what was going on. When the air finally cleared, Seadra and Lapras both were
barely conscious, trading blows. Lapras weakly lifted her flipper and fainted.
"... I won? I won!" shouted Sirius. Lorelei smiled and shook her head.
"A well-earned victory, I might add. You may now enter the next room."
TBC...
Dang, that was longer than I expected.
