From: SaberTeamR <saberteamr@aol.computer> Subject: [PW!] ...the Start of a New One! Date: Thursday, May 13, 1999 3:26 PM Having been outcast by Team Rocket boss Giovanni, Saber finds himself with nowhere to go. He decides to phone his cousin Mark in Pallet Town. "Hello, Mark speaking." "Mark, this is Saber, I need some help..." Mark was a genius when it comes to technical innovations. It was partially Mark's work that spawned the creation of the very device that had caused Saber's downfall, but he would never tell Mark that. Being only 12, Mark was extremely disaster-prone, hence his nickname "Mark911". It was just as likely for him to cause an explosion as it was for him to come up with some new invention. But Saber totally believed in Mark's abilities, and during his time as a Rocket, gave part of his profit to Mark so the young boy could get the things he needed. "Maybe some good *did* come of my Rocket life after all" thought Saber. "Switch to Video-mode." he added out loud. Mark appeared on the screen, in a pair of Jnco Jeans with a matching tshirt. Saber never got over how Mark seemed to always dress in designer clothes. He had always thought such things were a waste of money until Mark showed him the real way to get clothes cheap, and in good condition. "What can I do to help, Saber? I owe you so much for the support you've given me in my projects." The picture flickered slightly, and the young boy's voice started coming through a little staticy (SP?), probably because of interference from the several dozen electronic gadgets and doodads Mark was tinkering with. "I told you before, there's no need to thank me. What are cousins for? Listen, I'm at the Viridian City Pokemon Center, and I need some supplies. Unfortunately, I don't have any money and the Poke Mart is closed this time of night anyway. I was hoping you could bring me some of the stuff I need?" Saber hoped Mark still had that storehouse filled with Pokemon goodies. "No problem, the Poke Mart is a waste of money anyway. I've got everything you need right here! Now, what do you need?" *End flashback that started in the first post* ------------ Mark arrived a half an hour later with the things Saber had requested: A new prototype Pokedex (of Mark's own design), 10 Poke Balls, 5 or so Potions, various healing agents, and a change of clothes. Mark also brought along Saber's black bookbag, containing other things. Saber went to the restroom in the Center to change into his new outfit, composed of baggy black jeans, a black T shirt, and his signature black hat, turned to the right. To compliment his outfit was the red "R" belt buckle, covered by the shirt. While Saber changed, Mark fiddled with the Pokedex, which was gold in color, and had a different interface. When Saber returned to the main area of the Center, Mark started explaining the Pokedex's new features to him. "This is a new prototype Pokedex that I designed myself. I borrowed a normal Pokedex from Professor Oak and took it apart to see how it worked. I studied the internal workings, and found that several things could be improved. This new Pokedex features a holographic screen instead of a flat one, giving a 3D view of the Pokemon. It also contains an antenna (sp?), and has a direct link to the satelite dish on the roof of my house back in Pallet. Whenever any new Pokemon info is discovered, I will send it directly to your Pokedex, making upgrading much quicker and easier. You will get a message when data is updated. Also, with this new feature, we can send messages back and forth without the need for a phone. I've been developing this for years." Mark beamed. Saber smiled. Mark was obviously proud of his new invention. "The gold casing houses a network of intricate voice and pressure sensors. The Pokedex will only respond to your voice, and anyone else you program in. I also have a belt clip that the Pokedex fits into in it's compact state." Mark rummages through his bag. "Compact state?" Saber asked, puzzled. "Ah yes, the coolest feature!" Mark hit a button on the side, and the Pokedex started compacting itself, until it was half its original size. "This fits perfectly into the belt clip, and nothing short of a tornado will be able to remove it. That is, unless you learn the secret!" Mark clicks the Pokedex into the clip, and electronic locks can be heard clicking into place. you must hit buttons here, here and here simultaneously to free the Pokedex from the clip." Mark said as he gestured to three spots on the outside of the clip." "But what if I damage it? There seems to be alot of sensitive equipment in there, and I'm not really known for leaving things intact..." His thoughts roll back to several Team Rocket operations, mostly ones where the objective was to break into places and steal Pokemon. Such had been Team Rocket policy. There had generally been nothing left of the target when they were finished. "The casing is scratch, water, fire, electricity and dent resistant, and the internal workings are cushioned by several motorized air pumps." Mark said. "All this, and its not much bigger than a normal Pokedex in its normal state. Its even smaller when compacted! Mark, this is amazing!" Saber was very impressed. "I'm SO glad you like it!!" Mark was almost fainting. Having lived with Saber's family back before Saber was kicked out, he know that praise from Saber was rare, and was given only when Saber was really impressed. "I also have something else for you. Here's 300 dollars, you'll need it in your journey." "Mark, I can't take this! It's too much, you could put the money to better use. Here, take it back." Saber tried to return the money, but Mark refused. "No, think of it as a present from me. I'm serious. I won't take it back." Saber could see that Mark was adamant in his desicion. "Mark, thank you for everything you've done for me. There's no way I could repay you for this. In my darkest hour, you were there for me." "Don't worry about it. What are cousins for? Hehe." Mark says, quoting Saber's previous statement. "Well, I hafta get back to my work now. I'll stay in touch with you during your journey. Your Pokedex will sound a beep when I'm trying to contact you. We can communicate as if it were a walkie talkie. Only one drawback: it won't work in caves or anyhwere underground without some sort of signal amplification." "Allright Mark, I'll talk to you soon. And thank you again!" "OK, cya!" Mark said as he hopped on his reconditioned 4x4. With the departure of Mark, Saber's main concern was to get his supplies together for his journey. He would start tomorrow. He had read a buletin about the Pokemon League while waiting for Mark to arrive, and he now knew of his first destination: Pewter City. He programmed his Pokedex to contain his ID, and a record of his Pokemon. After fiddling for a few minutes, he pressed the "compact" button, and clipped in onto his belt, hearing the electronic locks click into place. "I'm sorry, but it's curfew time, and we're closing the Pokemon Center now. If you wish, you may stay here tonight." Saber turned around, and saw Nurse Joy standing by the door. "I think I'll take you up on that offer. I don't have any other place to go." Saber smiled. Joy returned the smile. "OK then, make yourself comfortable here in the main area, and good night." She then locked the doors, and went to her quarters in the back of the Pokemon Center. Saber sighed. "I'd better get some sleep, I have a big day ahead of me tomorrow." He laid down on his sleeping bag, and slowly drifted off to sleep. Next up: "The Journey Begins" ------------- OK, any comments? I'm still testing the waters of PW, so any suggestions that you think could help me would be much appreciated!
