They begin to do what is natural for them to do, what nature tells them to do. They mate and they reproduce. As insects, they lay eggs. They could be anywhere. In trees, in someone's meal, even as far away as Viridian Forrest. And what of the egg in Viridian City. For weeks, that's about it is. An egg. There's not much for it to do, not much else at all. Just sit there. And do nothing. For how long is a mystery, after all, it's just an egg. Perhaps for days, perhaps for weeks. Perhaps forever. It doesn't know. Until, that is, something miraculous happens. The egg begins to hatch. And then it's no longer an egg anymore. It's a caterpie. Just an insect, a bug. It doesn't know what to do except for what nature tells it to do. It looks at the sun for the first time and observes the world around it. And so it wanders. Eats a few leaves here and there when something sparks its interests. A shining red ball. Red is already exciting as it is, and the contrast against the green it's seen your whole life fascinates the Caterpie. There's also at the same time a sense of fear. Fear of the unknown. Unsure of what to do, it finally gives in to its curiosity and approaches the ball. And suddenly the ball opens and it feels like it's being sucked inside. It look all around you and all it sees is darkness. It's trapped. No way out. At first, it's scared, but soon it begin to feel cozy. Like it were born just to live here. "So this is what a cocoon is like," it thinks, "this is where I belong." Soon it adapts to its new environment. That's when it hear something for the first time: Voices. Humans. Humans conversing with each other. "Are you okay?" says one voice. "Fine," says the other. "That Pikachu sure packs a punch." "Thanks, I think I'll manage." "By the way, I found a bottle of antidote on my way over here for your Pidgey?" "You FOUND it?" "It was on the ground." "Okay, that's what I'm going to tell the judge." As it hears humans speak for the first time, it begin to notice a certain beauty about it. And it learns to enjoy hearing them speak. "Is there anything I can help you with?" "I think I dropped one of my Pokeballs over there." "Over here?" "Yeah." "Here you go." "Thanks." "You know, I'm not sure that's empty." "Don't be silly, that Pikachu ran away long before I had a chance to capture it. "I'm telling you, I don't think it was empty." "Yeah? And how could you tell?" "It just felt that way." "It felt that way?" "Yes." "Well... okay. But just for you." And then just as suddenly as it was pulled into its new cocoon, it is just as quickly taken out. "Well, hello there little guy," says the man, "I'm Steve. Who are you?" And for the first time in its life, it see the faces to go along with the voices it heard.
