"No..." said a voice in Shard's head, one he knew was his own. But another,
stronger voice, a call Shard knew would lead him to doom, beckoned him to
Saffron.

Shard entered Sabrina's gym silently, and walked into the main chamber, glaring
into the gym leader's evil eyes. "You have summoned me here, now what?" he
asked. "Now," she laughed. "I have something to tell you. And then you shall
die."
"So," asked Shard, "are you my mother?" "No," said Sabrina, "but it was I who
planted that lie in your head, to draw you to me. That is what I had to tell
you. And now, you die."
"Don't count on it!" shouted Shard, "Morroco, Shadow, D Sipher, Banshee,
Undermine, Oddrey 2, go!"
"So," said Sabrina coldly, "time to play. For keeps. Jynx, Slowbro, Mr. Mime,
Alakazam, Haunter, go!"
Shard looked at his own pokémon, and compared the lineup to Sabrina's. Shard
had six pokémon, but... What? Shadow hadbetrayed him, and was standing with
Sabrina's powerful psychics. There was no way he could win. "Pokémon.
retreat!" shouted Shard, bursting into a run. "Pursue them!" said Sabrina,
hovering in pursuit.
Shard ran. Beams of psychic energy streaked past him. Suddenly, he heard
screams. He looked, and D. Sipher and Morrocco had been hit. He snarled in
rage as the Diglett and Porygon fell lifeless, to the ground, beyond hope.
Suddenly, Banshee was hit. "Ooh, someone give her some Midol," joked the
injured Jigglypuff. Shard smiled for a few econds, before falling screaming to
the ground. His leg had been hit, and wasn't functioing. As all was dark, he
suddenly saw a glow. Undermine... was evolving. "All right! Oddrey, sleep
powder! Undermine, get us out of here!"
The pollen washed over Sabrina and her covorts, and they struggled to stay
awake. When the pollen cleared, Shard and his three remaining pokémon were
gone.

Erika finished applying the herbal remedy, and Banshee had laid the two empty
pokéballs on an altar and begun to sing a funeral hymn. Shard wept, as Erika
tried to find words. There were none...
