From: Dan <kirb9701@aol.computer> Subject: [PW!] Battle at Saffron Gym Date: Thursday, July 01, 1999 9:44 AM ~Saffron City Pokecenter Dan paced back and forth in the lobby. Clefairy paced too. "When is she going to get back out here?" Dan said. "Here I am," Amy said, stepping out from a back room. She had changed out of her Team Rocket uniform and was now dressed in dark blue shorts and a dark green T-shirt. "I think I'm ready." ----------------------------------------------------------- "Well, first you could use a Pokedex upgrade," Dan said. "What would that do? Amy said. "How would it be different than the one I have now?" "The upgrade adds more information for each Pokemon, additional strategy information, and some other things I don't know about yet," Dan answered. "Well, I guess it's ok," Amy said. "If it'll help me defeat the gym leaders ahead..." She then handed Dan her Pokedex. Dan walked over to one of the Pokecenter phones and dialed Professor Oak's lab. "Hello?" the voice on the other end said, and Prof. Oak's picture showed up on the screen. "Dan? Is that you?" "Yeah, it's me," Dan answered. "Listen, I need a Pokedex upgraded." "But the last upgrade I gave you was the latest available." "This Pokedex isn't mine," Dan said. "It's Amy's." "Amy?!" Oak said, shocked. "But she hasn't been heard from for over 3 years!" "I've found her, and she needs her Pokedex upgraded." "Ok, just put it in the slot." Dan put the Pokedex in the slot under the display screen, and waited. It took about a minute before the update was completed, and the Pokedex came out of the slot. "All right," Oak said. "Amy's Pokedex now has the latest information available." "Thanks," Dan said. "And could you tell Amy's parents that she's travelling with me for now?" "All right," Oak said. "Goodbye." "Goodbye." - "Here we are," Dan said, looking up at the building looming before him. "Saffron Gym." Amy slowly walked up to where Dan and Clefairy were waiting, thinking about her past experiences at the gym... ~flashback~ "Get him, Jigglypuff!" Amy shouted. "You're the last Pokemon I have! Body Slam!" 'Puff jumped forward at Sabrina's Alakazam, slamming into it with his balloon-like body. Alakazam stepped back a bit but wasn't hurt badly. "Psychic." Alakazam used his psychic powers to lift Jigglypuff into the air, then flung him to the wall behind Amy. Jigglypuff fell to the ground. "No!" Amy said. "Get up, Jigglypuff!" Jigglypuff tried to lift himself up, but then fell back down. He didn't have the strength any more. "It looks like you lose again," Sabrina said. Amy walked over to Jigglypuff and picked him up. "It'll be okay," she said. She walked out of the gym carrying Jigglypuff, her head down. ~~~~~ "Well, come on!" Dan said. "Are you coming in or not?" Amy was still. "Come on!" Dan said again. "Your Pokemon have gotten stronger since last time. You can beat Sabrina this time." Still nothing. "Well then, let's go in, Clefairy," Dan said, and walked in. After a minute or two..."Hey, wait for me!" Amy said, and ran through the gym doors. - "I knew you would be back someday," Sabrina said when Amy came in. "I'm ready this time!" Amy yelled. "I'm not going to lose." "The battle will begin now." Sabrina said. "3 vs. 3. Kadabra, go." "Go get'm Pikachu!" "Kadabra, Psybeam." Kadabra sent a powerful psychic beam at Pikachu. Pikachu was able to withstand the beam, but became confused. "Pikachu, Quick Attack!" Pikachu looked around, confused, and then looked ready to attack. He attacked...Amy! Amy went back a few steps, and then fell to the ground. "Pikachu!" Amy yelled. "Attack Kadabra, not me!" "Pika," Pikachu said, and got ready to attack Kadabra. "Psybeam again." Sabrina said. This time, Pikachu got the first hit in before Kadabra's Psybeam could make contact. Kadabra was knocked back a few steps, but was otherwise unfazed. Kadabra let the Psybeam loose on Pikachu, but this time he was able to withstand it, and no confusion resulted. "Pikachu, Thunderbolt!" Pikachu glowed with electric energy, and released the bolt from his cheeks. Kadabra seemed as if it was ready to faint. "Recover." "Oh no," Amy said as she watched Kadabra partially recover its strength. "I was afraid she would do that. Ok, Pikachu, same as before! Thunderbolt!" Pikachu quickly nodded and let loose another bolt of electricity. Kadabra, as before, looked as if it was about to faint. "Recover." "Oh no you don't!" Amy said. "Quick Attack before it can recover!" Pikachu was a yellow streak as he flew through the air and slammed into Kadabra. Kadabra wobbled, and fell to the ground. "Well," Sabrina said. "Impressive. But that was only the beginning. Go, Venomoth." "It never was easy to get past this one," Amy said to herself. "Maybe the Pokedex has something to say." "Venomoth is of the types Bug and Poison," the Pokedex said. "Flying, Fire, Ground, or Psychic types are recommended for use against this Pokemon." "My Fire and Ground Pokemon are with Professor Oak, and aren't very strong anyway," Amy said. "And Farfetch'd still needs more training. I don't even have any Psychic...wait! Butterfree!" "Are you choosing a Pokemon or not?" Sabrina said. "All right!" Amy said. "Don't fail me now! Butterfree!" "That's better. Venomoth, Leech Life." Venomoth flew at Butterfree and bit him. "Free!" Butterfree said in protest. "Butterfree, knock it away with Confusion!" Butterfree had the advantage with his Confusion attack, and knocked Venomoth quite a bit. "Now Psybeam!" "Disable." Venomoth was stronger and faster, so his attack hit first. Butterfree tried to fight back with his Psybeam, but couldn't. He strained, but still wasn't able. "Oh no!" "Venomoth, Psybeam." Venomoth launched his own Psybeam at Butterfree, confusing him. "No!" Amy said. "Use Sleep Powder! He can't attack if he's asleep!" Butterfree turned around and looked at Amy. "Ahh! Not me!" Butterfree lightly flapped his wings, blowing the sleep-inducing powder right at Amy. "No...can't...fall...asleep...must...finish...battle.....stay.....awake ......no..." "What?" Dan said. He ran to Amy from where he was standing on the sidelines. "You can't fall asleep now! You're in the middle of a battle! WAKE UP!" "Mmm...no," Amy sleepily said. "I don't wanna get up..." "WAKE UP!!" Dan repeated, shaking Amy. "Hmm...what?" Amy said, yawning. "What's going on?" "You're in the middle of a battle with Sabrina," Dan said. "Butterfree hit you with his Sleep Powder." "Oh, right!" Amy said, jumping to her feet. "Butterfree, try Psybeam again!" Luckily, the time spent waking Amy up had allowed Butterfree to shake off the confusion and disabling. "Leech Life." Venomoth flew at Butterfree, ready to bite, but was met by a powerful psychic beam. Given Butterfree's and Venomoth's levels, the beam wasn't powerful enough to knock Venomoth out, but it was enough to confuse him. He began to turn around and then headed for Sabrina. Sabrina sensed what was happening, and retuned Venomoth to his Pokeball. "Your skills have improved greatly," Sabrina said. "But you still can't win. Alakazam, go." "Butterfree, Sleep Powder!" "Alakazam, Confusion." As Butterfree dropped the powder, Alakazam used Confusion to send it right back. "Butterfree! Return." "You have one last Pokemon," Sabrina said. "Choose wisely." "Who could I pick?" Amy thought. "Most of my Pokemon aren't strong enough to take that Alakazam...but let's try our luck with...Jigglypuff! Go!" "Psychic." "Doubleslap, Jigglypuff!" Jigglypuff was thrown to the ceiling, much like he was in previous battles. Only this time, Jigglypuff controlled his fall. When he was in front of Alakazam, he slapped as many times as he could. "Now Body Slam!" Jigglypuff threw himself at Alakazam, hitting with great force. "Recover." "Uh oh," Amy said, as Alakazam recovered its strength. "Psychic again." Jigglypuff was thrown to the wall behind Amy, just like the last battle against Alakazam. "Body Slam him again, Jigglypuff!" Jigglypuff picked himself up and flew at Alakazam. The impact almost knocked Alakazam over. "Psybeam." Jigglypuff got hit full force. Luckily, he had learned to fight the confusion and was still ready for battle. "Doubleslap!" Jigglypuff jumped up and started slapping Alakazam hard. "Psybeam again." "No! Sing!" Miraculously, Jigglypuff's attack got in first. He sang, and Alakazam was fast asleep. Jigglypuff was getting quite weak, mostly because of the psychic beating he'd been taking. He wasn't sure he could finish the battle. "Come on, Jigglypuff, you can do it!" Amy said. "One last Body Slam!" Jigglypuff nodded, and jumped into the air. He put all the strength he had into the Body Slam he performed. Finally, Alakazam was down for the count. Amy just stood there, her eyes wide, staring at the battlefield. Then she burst out, "We did it!" and began to jump up and down. Clefairy danced around. Dan just smiled. Then Sabrina spoke. "You have improved much since your last visit. I am proud to present you with the Marsh Badge." A badge floated into Amy's hands. Amy attached the badge to her necklace. Amy walked over to Jigglypuff and picked him up. "You did great, Jigglypuff," she said, smiling. "Let's get to the Pokemon Center." She turned around and saw Dan and Clefairy already leaving the gym. "Hey, wait up!" she said, and ran after them with Jigglypuff in her arms. ----------- "Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us." -Calvin of "Calvin and Hobbes" Pokemon seen : 150 Pokemon owned : 144 Only 6 more to go!
