From: TheRunt <therunt411@aol.com> Subject: [PW!][Repost] Big P: Race Preparations Date: Thursday, September 16, 1999 6:51 PM (This is a compilation repost of the "Turnabout is fair play" and "Big P Pokémon Race" threads. For your convenience, a summary of this episode appears at the bottom.) The sun slowly dips into the horizon, the sky's usual blue is steadily becoming pink as it approaches its destination. Robert finally breaks the silence, "The only way we can win that race is through careful planning. Where can we all stay tonight, Lara?" Lara sits on her Rapidash, thinking a possible solution, "I got some spare rooms out in th' back for some a' ya'll, an' the rest of ya'll can stay at Joe's. He lives near my house, an' I'm sure he'll be glad to make some room since ya'll helped get our Pokémon back! Who wants ta stay in my house?" Robert holds Mithril-rama's hand and steps forward. Damian, Jon, and Sarah Jane do the same. Suddenly Christy comes running, pulled by Cuddles and Spunky. Lara nods at the group, "Kay, this'll do. Let's *all* go to my house now, then ya'll can split up when it's time ta hit the sack! Like Robert said, we gotta plan what we're all gonna do at the Big P Pokémon Race tomorrow!" In less than an hour, the entire group is hanging out at Lara's Pad. Felix, Kirsty, and Dustin converse amongst themselves at the front porch on what they should ride. They're all pretty much decided already, but still not one hundred percent sure. In the back yard corral, Jon and Sarah Jane are playing with the small Ponyta, having already made their decisions concerning the race. While playing, the cute Ponyta seems to form a special bond with Sarah Jane... Inside the house sit Lara, Robert, Mithril-rama, Damian, Runt, and Christy. Robert and Rilli sit opposite Damian and Lara at her large wooden table. Christy sits on a stool in the corner, legs crossed discreetly, while she combs her long blonde hair. Runt is sits Indian style on the floor, with Rolly next to him doing the best to mimic his trainer given his stubby legs. While ducking the Magnemite orbiting Damian's head, Lara asks, "So, what're ya'll gonna use for the race?" Damian and Runt are still in contemplation, while Christy doesn't seem to have a single thought in her mind other than to rid her unruly hair of tangles. Robert clears his throat and speaks up, "I'm going to use my Slowbro for the race!" There is silence. Even Bulletproof stops mid-orbit. Christy is the first to remark, "Uhh, but aren't Slowbro...kinda...slow?" The cheerleader giggles before going back to combing her hair. Robert pulls his fifth Pokéball off of his belt and rolls the shrunken sphere around in the palm of his hand, "Most Slowbro are very slow, but mine has an ace up his Shellder! He knows Swift, thanks to my friend, RK, who invented the TM!" Damian stares at Robert, wondering if the young man is trying to be daft, "I still don't think that's enough for him to win." Robert clenches his fist with Slowbro's shrunken Pokéball in it, "My only alternative would be to race my Tauros, who I probably wouldn't be able to remain on for over eight seconds, or my Snorlax who doesn't know the meaning of the word 'awake' -- I have confidence in my Slowbro, and I'm going to use him in the race tomorrow!" Runt stares intently at the display of his Pokédex and mutters to himself. Robert then nudges his girlfriend , "You've been rather quiet. Which of your Pokémon are you going to ride on? Pallapalla looks like a good choice since he has that large mushroom you can use as a saddle, or maybe Deimos, though he's kind of scrawny. There's always Electabuzz, if you want to climb up on his shoulders!" "I dunno..." Rilli scratched her chin in thought. "I probably don't have any suitable Pokémon for racing. Most of them are too small, I'd easily crush them. PallaPalla is kinda slow, and I'd probably slide right off the mushroom, there aren't any handholds. Electabuzz is a bit short, I don't know if he can support me..." She raises an eyebrow as she pictures herself being carried by Electabuzz who's roughly 2/3rds her size. She quickly dismissed the idea, "Too much of a strain. I guess Deimos is a possibility though, but..." "But?" Several voices around the table echoed her. "It's still pretty young," Rilli continues, "I don't think it'll be able to compete with most of the entrants there..." "Don't worry 'bout that," Lara pipes up. "The race isn't just for determinin' who has the best Pokémon, it's also so you can have fun! Some people like Dario take it way too seriously, but there's no reason to back out just 'cause ya think ya can't win." "Yeah!" Robert agrees. "Besides, the more people we have in the race, the less of a chance there is for Dario to win!" Rilli looks at her boyfriend for a couple moments, then smiles, "Then I guess I'm in." She gazes around the room. "Have any of you guys decided on your Pokémon?" "Skhan! Skhan!" cries Roo as he wakes from his slumber. Runt quickly picks up the infant and begins comforting him. A lightbulb appears over Runt's head and his eyes light up. "Lara!" "Yah?" she drawls. "Can a trainer enter a Pokémon in the race with another Pokémon as it's rider?" "I don' see why not," she replies, "Why? What'cha got in mind?" "Well, first I was gonna use Tiny - but I'm just too heavy for him. Then, I thought about using Rolly - 'cause he's strong enough. But since he stayed a Sandshrew when he evolved, it'd be too awkward for him too hold me." "So?" asks Christy. "So...when Roo woke up, I realized that he's the ideal jockey - he's small enough to be little burden to his mount, but large enough to qualify." Runt grabs the Poké-Pouch and begins a series of alterations. "And besides...He's already got a saddle," he says, holding aloft something reminiscent of a saddle. "Actually," begins Sarah Jane as she limps in, "I was thinking the same thing." "You mean about letting one of your Pokémon ride in the race," asks Christy. "Mmm hmm." "Yeah, but Shields won't be out of the Pokémon Center till later in the day," remarks Damian. "He'd probably be your best chance to ride another one." "I know. Ferdinand should be able to rest up enough to rest enough by tomorrow morning," she says, adjusting her Pokédex. She then tossed out a Pokéball. "Stallone should be the right size," she comments as the Machop appears. "Machop chop ma chop chop chop ma machop chop chop!" begins Stallone animatedly. Sarah Jane develops a large sweatdrop over her head. "I know," she says. "If you ride Ferdinand on the race, you can tell Stonewall about it." She turns to the others. "He's developed a bit of a rivalry with my Onix back home." "Anyone else enterin'?" asks Lara. Jon shakes his head. "There's no way I can manage to get one of my other Pokémon on my new Tauros. Some of them could ride it, but I don't wanna risk it." "I guess since flying Pokémon are allowed I'm in, too. Assuming I can get some cooperation..." Damian looks over at Drake. The Dragonite cocks his head and looks upward thoughtfully. He then shrugs his shoulders and nods his agreement. Damian looks back to the group, "Looks like I'm in. Anything else before the race?" Sarah Jane looks thoughtful for a moment. "If we're planning on leaving our racing Pokémon out of their Pokéballs, I would suggest that we perhaps leave some other Pokémon out as guards. Dario may have some of his goons out there come and try to harm the Pokémon." "You think he'd stoop so low?" asks Christy. "It's possible," says Lara. "He'll stop at nothin' to win the race." "Ni nido RAN!" barks Spunky as he pounces on a pillow and shakes it. Sarah Jane shakes her head, "You're not staying outside all night. I don't care if you think you can take them on yourself." "Maybe we can let him stay on guard for Roo and Stallone," suggests Felix. "Ma chop chop CHOP!" argues Stallone. He and Spunky glare at each other. A big sweatdrop forms over Sarah Jane's head while the others look confused. "Stallone doesn't think he needs a body guard...." "Well, you can still look out for Roo," says Runt. Spunky gives Stallone a self satisfied look. The Machop glares at the Nidoran. "It really must be tough being able to understand Pokémon," Jon comments. "You have no idea..." Sarah Jane sighs. The group continues to chat for a while into the cool dusk air of the Ranch. They finish enjoying some apple pie and ice cream just as Lara returns. "Ought ta get some rest, tonight. Yer cots are either in my house or over at that one over there." Everyone eyes each other suspiciously. Who gets what beds in what house? Felix brakes the false tension, "Meeh. Goodnight." And walks right into Lara's house. Everyone brakes into a mad dash for Lara's house, but Jon, Runt, Christy, and Damian don't even make it in the door. They all end up tripping over each other. "Oh well." Damian says from the top of the pile. They pick themselves up and move to the second ranch house, where they find its owner awaiting them. "Right in there! Y'all need some rest after that battle with Dario today!" the man says, smiling. As everyone fell asleep, Jon decides to leave Kabutops and Kadabra to guard... Runt wakes up as the sun begins to rise; spreading glorious shades of red, orange and purple through the early morning sky. Careful not to wake the baby Kangaskhan next to him, Runt sits up in bed. Looking around he spots Spunky, Roo's 'bodyguard,' facing the door - sound asleep. Runt pats the head of the curled up Dragonair at the end of his bed and stands up. "Nair?" Tiny asks sleepily. "Go back to sleep," whispers Runt, "I'll wake you when it's time to go." While getting his pants on, Runt taps Spunky's backside with his foot. The young Nidoran springs to attention, "Ran! Ran!" "Keep it down, you'll wake the entrants..." "Nido Ran.." replies the bunny, glaring. After he finishes getting ready, Runt gently lifts Roo and sets him in his Poké-pouch. "Tiny, time to go..." The Dragonair yawns, stretches his sinewy body, then floats to the floor. The small group quietly makes their way to Lara's house and opens the door. "Ni ni do!" cries Spunky as he dashes for Sarah Jane. "Looks like someone's happy to see you," comments Runt. "Looks like..." Sarah replies, "How'd you sleep?" "Pretty good I guess. You?" "Okay - my ankle woke me though," she says limping towards the cupboard. "You sit down, you need to stay off that ankle when you can." Runt helps her to a chair then returns to the kitchen area. "Besides, it's not often that I get to cook a nice ranch-style breakfast - What'll it be?" "How about some toast?" "Toast?!?" When Lara enters the room, she finds Runt busy cooking in the kitchen area; Felix seated at the breakfast table, apparently considering something; Robert and Rilli getting situated; and Sarah Jane nibbling on some toast, watching her Nidorans chasing each other around the room. "Mornin', folks," Lara calls out cheerfully as she stepped in the room. "Everyone ready for the big race today?" "MACHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP!" shouts Stallone as Sarah Jane rolls her eyes. "Stallone is ... excited ... about the race," she says. Spunky seems to tire of chasing his sister and decides it would be more fun to chase Lara's Growlithe. "Do they ever stop?" asks Robert as he watches the Growlithe try to back away from the playful young Nidoran. "Almost never," says Damian as he walks in, followed by Drake who nods emphatically as he hopes Cuddles and Spunky don't notice him. "How's the foot?" asks Rilli. "Sore. It'll take a few days," replies Sarah Jane. "I'd like to be able to ride in the race myself, but I don't think I'd be able to ride Ferdinand the entire race." "Got about an hour till race time," interjects Lara. "So ya'll eat up." While everyone present who hasn't eaten gobbles up their breakfasts, Robert paces around the room, "The race is making me edgy. I actually woke up before Rilli today! The excitement is getting to me!" Lara chuckles and places a hand on Robert's shoulder, "Like I said b'fore, it's not all about winning th' race, just try yer best. But remember, anybody who wins the Big P Pokémon Race becomes an honorary members of th' Laramie clan! It's probably why Dario wants ta win every year, ta tag our name onto the Dodrio he raises! Never does, though, an' with so many great trainers in th' race, I'm sure one'a ya'll are gonna win insteada that jerk!" Stallone, Sarah Jane's Machop, proudly flexes his muscles, "Machop, Chop, CHOP!" Robert looks outside the window, "I'm going to go take a walk, let my Slowbro stretch before the race, then I'll meet you guys at the starting line! See you then!" Mithril-rama drops her fork and speaks while still chewing on some breakfast, "Mway op fuh mwe!" Rilli sweatdrops at her rudeness, remembering her mom's lessons, and finishes swallowing her food, "Wait up for me! I think Deimos should stretch out too!" Though not finished with her meal, Rilli excuses herself, and heads out the door with Robert. "I almost forgot about that," comments Runt as he picks up Rilli's plate. "What?" asks Sarah Jane. "That the winner gets to be an honorary member of the Laramie Clan..." "So?" asks Felix. "So, I always figured that I'd prob'ly end up in the family business - that would just be the clincher... If I became an honorary member of the Laramie Clan, not only would I have the Cloverwood name - but the prestige of the Laramie Clan as well..." < Later, at the Race > Fireworks burst in the bright blue sky, not a single cloud visible. A voice on a loudspeaker announces: "Welcome ladies and gentlemen, to this year's Pokémon challenge, sponsored by the Laramie Clan! Our course takes our challengers over rugged terrain, to test their speed and ability. Whoever clears all the obstacles and crosses the finish line first is our winner. All Pokémon trainers who wish to compete must apply at the Information Center." Runt looks out towards the horizon. Almost everyone is there, but Robert, Rilli, and Dario still haven't shown up. Runt pets the baby Kangaskhan nestled in the fake pouch , "Are you ready to ride Tiny, Roo?" The baby Kangaskhan squeals, "Skhan! Skhan!" and nods contentedly, happy to finally be able to do something. Just then, Rilli dashes up to the group riding Deimos like a pro. The Doduo doesn't seem to feel any pain and Rilli looks completely comfortable on her mount. One of the Doduo's heads exclaims, "Do! Do! Do!" The other nods and shrieks, "DUO!!!" Christy squints towards the distance, but sees no one else, "Like, I don't see Robert anywhere. Is he coming?" After a long pause, a huge blue Shellder comes into view. The Shellder is dragging a young trainer wearing a black shirt and blue jeans as well as a large pink mass, the rest of the enigmatic Pokémon known as Slowbro. Robert comes into view, apparently skiing on the Shellder on Slowbro's tail, "Hey everyone!" Slowbro gradually turns around, looking annoyed at the fact he was being dragged by his lesser half. He lets out a dopey growl, "BRRRRR!!!" Robert hops off of his Slowbro and rubs his gentle underbelly, "I'm sorry, Slowbro, but I let Shellder lead so that you wouldn't get tired. You can be in the lead during the race!" After some consideration, Slowbro smiles, "Ahhh, Slow!" Damian Fox and Drake, the Dragonite, walk up to the group. "Hey guys, go over to the Information Booth and fill in your applications." Damian informs the group. "Basically, they want to know your name, age, Pokémon used for racing, and if it applies, Pokémon jockey. I've already filled mine out. I just hope Drake doesn't change his mind." Drake crosses his arms, insulted that his trainer would even consider him to break his unspoken promise. The group heads over to sign up for the Big P Pokémon Race. Mithril-rama hands in her application without any problems, since Doduo is a common choice for smaller jockeys. Robert quickly fills in his application and hands it in to the woman working behind the booth - the woman then breaks out into laughter. After a moment, the laughter dies down and Robert joins his friends. Jon walks up, finishing a bagel. He nods to the group, and walks over to the application desk. He fills one out, and hands it in. Soon after walks over to the area where the group is chatting. Runt then approaches the booth. "I'd like a Race application form please." The lady hands him one, he fills it out and turns it in. "Cloverwood, huh?" says the woman as she looks over the sheet. "I always wonder'd how one of you folks' Pokémon would do - Good luck..." "Thanks..." <To Be Continued...> Summary: The group prepares for the big Race. _______________________________________________________________ "Slow and steady wins the race."
