The stifling silence clouding Natasha's mind was quite thoroughly broken
by panicked shouting. Looking up from her beloved fire beast's scorched
side, she glanced over her shoulder and choked back a scream.
Distant crackling only hinted at the raging fire behind her. A wooden
ceiling support crashed to the ground, igniting a carpet.
Natasha swallowed hard and turned to face Charizard again. The dragon
remained still, oblivious to the rapidly spreading flames. Searching for
Charizard's Pokéball would be pointless, and there was no way that
Natasha could move the huge serpent. "Move, hurry! The...fire..."
Charizard's head lifted, and it craned in the direction of the fire.
/~Go.~/
"What?! I--"
/~Now! You can make it. I can't. If you stay, we'll *both* die!~/
"I'm not going without you..."
Charizard took as deep a breath as its injuries could allow, then
stretched one foreleg ahead and sunk its claws into the floor. With a
loud grunt, it dragged itself forward and repeated.
Natasha followed slowly by the beast's side, stopping frequently for
Charizard to catch its breath. /~You...should have just gone...~/
"Well, I--" Natasha paused. Despite the weak, forced sound to it,
Charizard's mental voice sounded distinctly feminine.
Charizard picked up on her thoughts immediately. /~Yes...I am female,
master.~/
"And you never thought to TELL me this?!"
/~You never asked.~/
Natasha twitched and continued walking. She gasped, then coughed hard
from the rapidly thickening smoke. "The door...it's just ahead, there!
You can--"
She was cut off as another support beam collapsed, landing squarely on
her shoulder. Charizard's head jerked from side to side as she tried to
see something, but found only darkness.
The lizard winced and gripped Natasha's sleeve in her teeth, dragging
her alongside for the remaining distance.
Just as she reached them, the church's closed doors caught fire and
quickly burned to ashes, leaving portions of the door frame still
burning across them. Being a fire type, Charizard could sense the flames
ahead. Taking another deep breath, she coiled back onto her massive hind
legs for an instant before springing forward through the wall of fire.
Charizard lost grip of Natasha's dress in midair, causing the two to
tumble a distance before crashing against an apartment building.
/~Master?~/ No response. /~Are you there?~/
She sniffed around for a moment and caught the scent of Natasha's
smoldering dress. With extreme effort, she pulled herself forward until
her nose bumped Natasha.
The serpent nudged her, and, getting no reaction, gently gripped her
trainer's arm in her mouth.
It dropped into back onto the sidewalk as if nothing had happened.
/~Master? Please...~/
Ignoring her injuries, Charizard sat back onto her haunches, her tail
stretched stiffly behind her. The dragon stretched her head upwards
towards the heavens, spread her wings, and roared.
