Date: Friday, December 24, 1999 8:14 AM
Grass Field, Indigo Plateau.
Galahad darted around the outside of the arena, his wings a blur of
motion. As the distance between him and his enemy rapidly closed, the
Beedrill readied an attack. With a snap of his forearms, his two thick
primary stingers detached and launched themselves at his foe, plumes
of smoke trailing behind them like missiles zooming towards their
target.
[PW!] [League] Frostbitten: Felix VS Lorelei
By: Cat-Gonk
"Galahad uses Twin Needle in an attempt to take advantage of Bug's
little-known strength against Psychic!" shouted the excited announcer.
"Both challengers have two victories under their belts, it looks like
the winner here will have a definite shot at the Pokemon League Games
title!"
Lorelei's Jynx dove to the ground, but its exeggurated viking
brassiere prevented it from narrowing its profile. The two lances
slammed into its shoulders, carrying it across the arena and into the
ground. A large channel of earth lay carved out by its body as it was
dragged across the ground.
"Galahad! Agility! Just hold out and get set up!"
The trainer across the other side of the battlefield remained mute,
her icy-cold calmness matching her Pokemon. Lorelei was regarded as
the strongest of the Elite Four, her Ice Pokemon were more versatile
than one might think at first glance. Though Slowbro was cheating
somewhat, very few trainers did not know and fear what she took into
battle.
"Jynx. Blizzard."
The Humanshape Pokemon plucked the venomous barbs from her body,
toxins surging through her veins. It was only a matter of time before
the poisons took Jynx out of the battle due to the, "interesting"
effect that Beedrill venom had on psykers.
Raising its arms to the sky, a black cloud formed above Jynx. As it
pushed its arms forwards, a torrent of icy shards launched themselves
at Galahad. Blizzard was more likely to miss most Pokemon, as the
intense barrage prevented the attacking Pokemon from seeing its
target, but if all the projectiles hit it was likely that the victim
would be unconscious, or frozen in a block of solid ice.
Barrel-rolling around every single projectile, Galahad slammed into
Jynx with his tail stinger and dodged sideways to avoid the storm
cloud. As Jynx hit the ground, its body began to shake and tremble.
Members of the audience covered their faces, thinking that Jynx was
about to use its somewhat-unappetising Thrash attack, but the poisons
were doing their work attacking Jynx's hyper-evolved brain. In a few
moments, Jynx would explode into a hail of...
"Jynx! Return!" As the red beam encapsulated Jynx, a light went out
under Lorelei's picture at the scoreboard. Felix was in the lead.
Lorelei was not happy. Behind her glasses, the alluring Pokemon
trainer was seething inside. A Beedrill of all Pokemon, something
restricted to bug catchers and Shorts Kids had taken out her rare,
prized Jynx with only two attacks. She could easily win this now, and
reached for her final Pokeball.
"Go! Lapras!"
A certain spectator felt a surge of hatred as the leviathian
materialised on the grass, its prescence filling him with bitterness.
Lapras, though not of the same trainer all of the time, had made a
mockery of his self confidence, decimated his lineup and generally
strung him up to plug his every orifice. Though in recent times the
majestic Pokemon were even less than an annoyance, the mental wounds
were still in place.
But he couldn't send any aid to Felix, this was one battle he'd fight
unassisted.
"Galahad! Pin Missile!" Unable to use its lances, Galahad detached its
lower body with a click of its carapace and hoisted the stinger over
its shoulder like a missile launcher. The strange biological weapon
rattled off a hail of bullet-like stingers, small venomous barbs
shaped for flight. They appeared almost like a swarm of bees as they
corkscrewed through the air, the non-Pokemon Beedrill decended from.
Lapras merely turned sideways and closed its eyes. The cloud of barbs
richocheted off its armoured shell, a few cutting into its soft blue
flesh. Most of the barbs had been aimed at its midsection hoping for a
hit in the internal organs, but Lapras proved to be suprisingly mobile
considering its awkward shape.
A searing flash of light lit the arena. A brilliant white beam had
latched onto Galahad's body, and overloaded his senses with waves of
shimmering white light. Lapras' Confuse Ray was sucessful, as the
light died down the poison-bee Pokemon was struggling to compose
itself.
"Don't move! Try and compose yourself!"
In his confusion, Galahad couldn't hear a word Felix said. Galahad
dropped his weapon and fell to the ground in a daze. His compoud eyes
were slowly recovering bits and pieces of the whole picture, but other
than that all he could see were dancing, shining colours. His sense of
balance was completely gone. and he slumped to the ground unable to
tell which way was up. Galahad's wings struggled to pick it up off the
ground, but were spinning him around due to his natural timing being
destroyed. The once-frightening Poison Bee now resembled a fly sprayed
with insecticide as it twitched in his death throes.
A powerful bolt of blue energy slammed into Galahad's body, freezing
and cracking open a part of its exoskeleton. Death, or at least
unconsciousness, seemed certain.
"Return!" The safety of the Pokeball took Galahad out of the match,
but at least it was alive. Lapras was a frightening opponent. It was
barely scratched, while Felix lost a Pokemon. In desperation, he
hastily thought over his next move.
"Chansey! Go!"
Chansey leapt into the ring, eager to battle. Chansey would have the
best chance, its Fighting attacks being strong against Ice. Most
Chansey were very weak in terms of physical power, but this one could
shatter three feet of concrete with a downwards punch.
"Submission! Go for its throat!"
Lapras' long neck was an easy target for a trained wrester like
Chansey. Launching itself at its enemy, Chansey prepared for a simple
headlock to snap Lapras' neck and take the sea-giant out of the
battle. As it neared its target, it seemed to notice the levithian's
single horn glowing blue.
Moments later, a block of ice encapsulating a fat pink Pokemon hit the
grass.
In mere seconds, Lorelei had turned the tide. One more light went out
under Felix's name.
"This certainly looks like a comeback!" said the announcer. "Felix's
remaining Pokemon are all weak to Ice moves, especially the Ice
attacks wielded by something as mighty as Lorelei of the Elite Four's
Lapras!" Lorelei bowed to the crowd, who roared their approval.
"C*nt!" said Felix under his breath. It seemed only natural to swear
when being beaten more terribly than ever before in his entire life.
He'd never lost a match by more than one Pokemon before, let alone in
under a minute. None of Felix' remaining Pokemon stood a chance, but
just incase Goddish smiled upon him...
"Go Cygnet! Carve that thing up!"
Cygnet the Farfetch'd came out at an incredible speed, slamming into
Lapras' side. Three thin lines began to turn red on its neck. Cygnet
stayed out of the behemoth's field of vision, while attacking with its
leek.
"Lapras. Hydro Pump."
Cygnet made a break turn away from Lapras, leek glowing red from
Swords Dance. One single hit could shatter through its carapace and at
least give Felix the honour of not being thrashed too badly.
Four deadly-accurate blasts of water from Lapras' mouth knocked Cygnet
out of the air and into the grandstand. The torrential force of the
attack was too much for the duck Pokemon to overcome by flapping its
wings, and the duck Pokemon felt himself plough into the grandstand.
Though the Farfetch'd had plenty of fight left in him, he'd been
carried out of the arena.
In an instant, before Cygnet had even a chance to counterattack, the
battle was gone, as well as Felix's hopes and dreams. The last light
went out from under Felix' picture, before his side of the scoreboard
was replaced with "A WINNER IS YOU!". The deliberate spelling error
sent waves of laughter throughout the crowd, which did little to
increase Felix's confidence.
Cygnet shook himself dry much to the dismay of the already-soaked
spectators he'd landed in, and flew down towards the arena. Felix was
already making his journey back to the trainer's village, his spirit
crushed.
Later.
"Yes?"
Hearing the knocks on the door, Felix wiped the tears from his eyes
and picked himself up off the bed. Opening the door to the extent of
the security chain, it was Lorelei, her glasses and black dress
immediately noticable features.
"Can I come in?"
"Sure."
Unhooking the chain, Felix let the door swing open before slumping
back on his bed, the pillow somewhat dampened.
"You took this one pretty hard, huh?" asked the member of the Elite
Four. She took a seat from a table nearby, and moved it towards Felix'
bed before sitting down. "I take it you've never lost before?"
"Not often, why?" Felix tried to keep his composture, but the odd sob
and sniffle were still evident.
"People like you tend to take it a bit too hard. Being the first
battle of Elite Four, I see a lot of kids who've never lost and get
broken by defeat."
"It was the worst..."
"Don't worry about it. I remember this one kid who looked a lot like
you, his Pokemon weren't really up to the standard. He'd spent all his
money beforehand so he wouldn't lose anything, as he knew that there
wasn't a chance of him beating the Elite Four with a below-standard
lineup. I battled him about ten times in one day, giving him what he
needed to defeat me, stronger Pokemon and more experience in battle.
The next day, he worked the entire Elite Four and went on to become a
Pokemon Master."
Felix remained silent.
"He used a stack of items during the match, but he did it."
Nothing but a muffled sob through the pillow.
"Well, I'll leave you alone then. Don't take defeat too seriously, I
get caned all the time. After all, if I didn't lose then no-one would
ever be able to tell you how bad Bruno is."
He heard the door gently shut, and the clicking of computer keys.
Heavy, seemingly armoured footsteps walked off into the trainer's
village.
Felix certainly felt better, but it didn't seem quite right. A member
of the Elite Four searching through the trainer's village just to give
her bested opponent a brief pep talk? It seemed sincere and truthful
enough, Felix didn't have any suspicion there, but the language seemed
familiar, it definately wasn't Lorelei talking.
In the distance, what could be described as a bootleg meow echoed
through the busy streets of Indigo Plateau.
