>"Then please..." 'Maria' took her chin off Maria's shoulder and looked
>Maria in the eye. "...tell Mimic how. Please."
>
>"Well, first..." Maria's intended retort about changing into something
>other than herself was interrupted by a sudden yawn. Looking up in the
>sky, a brilliant crescent moon was the only thing that overpowered the
>nearby street lights to shine in the night sky. "...we should find some
>place to sleep. I don't know about you, but I can't stay awake
>forever."
>
>"Neither can Mimic...though Mimic think Doppler do that sometimes, so
>maybe Mimic learn how if necessary."
>
>"Right. Anyway, we can bunk at...my..." Maria blinked. She was going
>to say her employer's nearby base, but where was that?
"Mimic no like go near Rockets," Mimic looked around in an apprehensive way.
Then he glanced back at Maria. "No take wrong way though."
Maria shook her head. "None taken. I am ATR, after all."
"Oh..." Mimic paused and frowned. "Change since Mimic saw last? Maria still
in Rocket uniform."
"Well, yeah..." An uneasy feeling settled over her. Of course she was still
in uniform, because she *was* a Rocket! Well....wasn't she? Maria blinked.
Wait, no, now she remembered, she was an ATR spy! Yeah...that was it...right?
"Oh, that. I'm a spy for ATR, that's why. I work inside Team Rocket."
Mimic raised an eyebrow. "Maria's voice sound funny when say that."
Maria shrugged. "Just tired, I guess."
"Since when Maria Anti-Rocket?"
"Hmm, doesn't quite have the same ring to it, does it?"
"Ring? Mimic no hear ring... Or does Maria mean ring on finger." He looked
down at his hands. "Mimic see no ring."
"No, no...I mean..." She giggled. And surprised herself. "Well, I don't
remember, really. I think I've always been an ATR."
"Mimic sure Maria was not...but maybe Mimic mistaken."
The lingering doubt on his face, only fueled her own. "WIGGLYTUFF!" Grateful
for once to hear the squeaky cry, she turned towards the distraction. A large
pink Wigglytuff was bouncing at them. The big blue eyes flashed merrily.
"TUFF!....Wiggly?" It looked from Maria to 'Maria.' "Wiggllyyy...?"
Maria pulled a pokeball from her pocket. "I almost forgot about you..." She
recalled the Wigglytuff into the pokeball and tucked it away. Mimic drew away
slightly in fear.
Taking notice of it, Maria patted his shoulder. "Don't worry, I won't catch
you."
"Mimic know not all pokemon dislike pokeballs, but Mimic no really understand
why." He glanced up. Maria was searching through her trenchcoat. "What look
for?"
"Icarus...he's missing!"
Mimic blinked. "Icarus?"
"Icarus was a baby Ditto I found awhile ago." She pulled off her coat and
shook it out. "You don't think he could have fallen out...!" Her voice rose
slightly in panic.
"Don't think so..." Mimic looked faraway for a moment. "'Icarus?'" He
smirked. "Maria no worry about 'Icarus.' Mimic have good source, Ditto
okay."
"How can you be sure?"
"Mimic sure."
Maria sighed. "That was the second Ditto I lost...I can't seem to keep ahold
of them." She smiled a bit at him. "Well...maybe better luck in the future.
Slasher's going to be upset though. He had put a lot of responsibility on
himself."
"Slasher understand, Mimic sure." He looked up at the treetops that were being
tossed around by the wind.
"I hope so." She pulled her coat back on. "We'd better head on to the Rocket
Station if I'm going to be able to face tomorrow." She looked her double up
and down. "But first I think you'd better change. It's going to look
suspicious if two of me come in. Many around there know me, and they know I
don't have a twin."
"Let see..." Mimic paused and thought for a moment. Then he morphed. In the
shadows, Maria couldn't make out much beneath the generic gray Rocket uniform
except that he was male. He lifted the brim of his cap slightly, and the
moonlight reflected off his eyes.
Maria blinked. "I guess that works." She took his arm and led him away from
the park. "Y'know, you really make that work."
"Mimic see plenty Rocket uniforms before..." He bowed his head a bit.
"I should be able to keep them off your back," Maria gave his arm a gentle
squeeze. "They'll hafta go through me before they get their hands on you."
She yawned and rested her head against him as they walked. It was a silent
night in Saffron, and the only thing louder than their footsteps was the rising
winds.
After Maria and Mimic slipped past the sleeping guard, they checked in with
Nurse Starr. Upon seeing the shy man with Maria, she lifted her eyebrows
questioningly at her. "You with a boyfriend? The
untouchable-except-to-Mr.-Greeneyes Maria? Hah, now I've seen everything."
Maria rolled her eyes. "Please, cut me some slack. He's just a new recruit
I'm showing around."
"Sure." Nurse Starr leaned towards Mimic. "My, you must be some looker, if
she's actually given you the time of day..." Mimic pulled his hat brim down,
trying to avoid eye contact with the nurse. "So, what's your name? Don't
think I've ever seen you before..."
"Umm, sorry Nurse Starr, but we've been out all day, and I think he's too
sleepy to talk right now." Maria tugged on Mimic. "G'nite!" She pulled Mimic
off towards the rooms.
"Have fun," Nurse Starr chuckled, and went back to treating pokemon.
When they found their room, Maria was really starting to feel exhausted. Mimic
wasn't feeling very tired himself, but he was watching her very closely. Maria
locked the door behind them, and fell back on the bed.
Mimic looked around. The room was small, with only a dresser and chair on one
side facing the bed. A glance up, and he could see a tiny window towards the
top of the wall. "Tight as pokeball in here."
"But when you're as tired as I am, any bed will do." Maria got up and pulled
off her trenchcoat and tossed it on the chair. Then she did the same with her
boots and gloves. She had taken off her uniform jacket, and was about to pull
off her black undershirt, when she noticed Mimic watching. Her face grew hot,
and she tucked her shirt back down again. "Sorry...I'm not really used to
company."
"Mimic not either." He sat on the other side of the bed and folded his arms
around himself. Maria wasn't very good at reading people, and even less at
Ditto, but she felt he was nervous, and the feeling was mutual.
"Well, we should both get some sleep now," Maria said softly, reaching over to
dim the bedside lamp. "The clearer your mind is, the better it is to see who
you are." She drew back the blankets and slid underneath.
Then she blinked up at Mimic, who was still sitting on the side of the bed.
She watched him for a minute. "Mimic, we can share the bed. It isn't like we
haven't slept together before."
"...Mimic was no asleep then really."
Maria shook her head. "I guess it is kinda different, if not for that
reason...but c'mon. I'm not going to have you sitting there all night. It's
creepy."
"Mimic..." He looked like he was about to get up, but Maria quickly sat up and
pulled him back down. She pulled off his cap and tossed it away, where it hit
the dresser. She looked directly at him, but it was so dark in the room that
she couldn't see anything other than his shape. Then she pulled him down and
tossed the covers over him.
"Could turn into coathanger, be very comfortable on chair."
"No...Mimic, you're not a coathanger." Maria ran a hand over him, and noticed
how stiff he felt. "And you should relax before you hurt yourself." She
reached up and stroked his hair before pulling away again.
"Mimic no more human than coathanger."
"Perhaps." Maria nestled up against him, and put her arms about him. "But
you're warmer this way."
"Mimic could be hot coathanger."
"Now that's just silly."
"Mimic not silly. Silly is silly."
Maria sighed. "Now I don't know if you mean that or not."
"Mimic mean it. And Mimic don't."
"Okay...." Maria yawned. "I have an idea for a starter exercise for finding
out who you are."
"What?" Mimic's voice perked up noticably.
"Try to clear your thoughts for me."
"Mimic...try."
"Now...tell me..." Maria rolled onto him. Then she pulled the length of her
body up along his until she met him eye to eye. "What you feel."
Mimic quivered slightly as his current form reacted to her touch.
"Mimic...feel...fever?"
Maria sweatdropped. "Fever? You're sick?"
"Mimic not sure. No really feel sick. But...heat, like fever, Mimic guess."
"Hmm....well, guess Rome wasn't built in a day." She sunk down on top of him,
her eyes half closed with sleepiness. "Aw, what the heck." She learned in and
kissed him deeply, her hands running up through his hair.
Maria certainly couldn't see, and Mimic was too startled to notice soft blue
glow outside the window. One wide blue eye peered in, then slitted, before
whisking away. Somehow, it thought, somehow she had eluded him...but now he
could find again. And with *him*....oh, now that he hadn't expected....how
convient. It would be like killing two birds with one stone, as the saying
went. But it had to be done just right...
As it darted away through the cloudy night sky, a faint cry could be heard if
anyone was around to hear it. "Meeeeeewwwwww..."
